Rachel Maddow: Political Game Changer
By Sam Boyd, The American Prospect
For years, liberals thought they could catch up in the media by playing by conservatives' rules. Maddow proves it's better to just change the game."I think I have a fear in general about whether being a pundit is a worthwhile thing to be," Rachel Maddow tells me over dinner at a Latin restaurant in lower Manhattan. It's more than the ordinary self-deprecation of someone who just got her own cable commentary show. It's an
insecurity essential to the on-air style that's powered the 35-year-old's rapid rise from a wacky morning radio show in western Massachusetts to the liberal radio network Air America and now to her own prime-time show on MSNBC.
...
Maddow started her career with more interest in changing policy than in changing the media. After attending Stanford, she studied at Oxford, where as a Rhodes scholar (she says she was the first openly gay American to receive the honor) she completed a dissertation that expanded on work she was already doing as an AIDS activist. Her efforts were based on a profound public-health insight: Prisons offer a surprising opportunity for AIDS prevention and treatment because inmates are a vulnerable population collected in one place and have a constitutional right to health care.

Me, too. I'm just so surprised to hear those kinds of opinioins on my television, and then to hear that she's out made it all the better. I had no idea she was a Rhodes scholar.

Rhoades Scholars are not academics even that hayseed Clinton was one. It is an association for Marxist hopefuls.

Convicted criminals do not have any constitutional rights to health care, and neither do decent people that are not criminals. This is one distortion of reality. Health care is the responsibility of the individual.

We weren't discussing healthcare, or Rhodes scholars. We were discussing out homosexuals who are making contributions to society. Do you know any Bart?

The first step to solving a problem is to admit that you have one.
If you want to discuss reality issues, it would be best if you joined reality first.

I think everyone does. Because medical care has undergone radical changes. Today lives can be saved that no one could have imagined being savable twenty years ago. CAT scans and MRI's are allowing doctors to diagnose diseases so early, or diagnose at all. There are many drugs that keep people alive today or cure them. And it is all extremely expensive. Today more than at any time in history, whether you live or die depends on how much money you have. And that is immoral. I don't want to socialize everything, not even education, but I do think we have an absolute moral imperative to socialize medicine. No one should be required to die for lack of money. And it happens every day. I have had it happen to friends and family. No insurance, no treatment. Go home and die.

NO! This nation would be so much better off if health care were denied to the majority of the low wage earners. That way they would die off at a younger age and be less likely to have children that would be lazy burdens on society.

(sigh)
There are going to be some tough choices becaase we can't afford to keep researching advanced medical care hile we ignore basic health care on a neighborhood level. I sent a friend to a non-denominationa' clinic recentlly, and she was told that they only do abortions. The only other places offereing treatment were pro-life propaganda shops.
It costs millions of dollars to save lives in the advanced neo-natal care units, yet public hoppitals are becoming a thing of the past. There are too many specialists and not enough nurses,
The one good thing is that nationalizng medice would stop the flow of doctors from other countries, like Canada where despite the long waits and other issues, they would not give up their national health plan and no Canadian politican has made it a suggestion.
My best guess is that a system could be set up through the VA medical establishment. They already have a way to reemburse medical professionals, and a system which could be ramped up to include the general pupulation. This would also be an ideal way to deal with our current needs for returning vets, iinsuring that they get the best standard of care available.
Third, I would offer a tax free real estate option to existing doctors. The local economy could absorb the lost revenue to the tax base, but doctors need some sort of compensation for the investments they've made. A lowered income tax rate for all medical professions is another option.
(and to stay within the topic, maybe someday gender reassignment surgery will focus on function as well as appearance)

First time I've been to the Huggington Post, but there's some other great video as well. Unfortunately the Britney video wasn't available.

This guy, a Bush speech writer, comes on Rachel's show for some reason, and starts criticizing the style of Maddow's show. She doesn't roll over, even taken by surprise, she gives back as good as he dishes out and even better, he knows he's out of line doing it on her show. The video might not show it, but in terms of what Frumm was trying to do, he got his ass kicked.

I watched that live the other night.
Rachel is great. I love her show.
She kept her cool and Frum was clearly (literally) squirming in his seat. Then he goes on to write about the incident the next day and claims that he was broadsided. That was complete BS. The pre-interview notes clearly stated what was going to be on the agenda during the interview.
He lied.
What a shock.

Yeah, it was still great. especially compared to what happens when O'Reilly gets called on the carpet by one of his guests.
