LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - O.J. Simpson, the former football star who was famously cleared of double murder in the sensational 1990s "Trial of the Century," was found guilty on all charges in his Las Vegas kidnapping and robbery case on Friday.

Simpson was convicted along with co-defendant Clarence "C.J." Stewart on the 13th anniversary of his controversial 1995 acquittal and immediately jailed by Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass.

Both Simpson, 61, and Stewart, 54, face mandatory minimum sentences of five years behind bars and could be sentenced to life in prison.

The star-athlete-turned-actor appeared somber and emotional as the verdict was read late on Friday night, and winced as he was handcuffed by marshals and led from the courtroom into a holding cell.

His sister, Carmelita Durio, collapsed in the courtroom gallery and his daughter Arnelle sobbed as he and Stewart were led away. Durio was treated by paramedics.

Lawyers for Simpson and Stewart asked Glass to let the two men remain free pending sentencing on December 5 -- a request the judge summarily rejected.

Simpson's lead attorney, Yale Galanter, said he would appeal the conviction, which came after some 13 hours of deliberation in a single day by the jury of nine women and three men.

Galanter said Simpson's past as a notorious murder defendant, widely seen as having eluded justice in Los Angeles, was a factor in the swift verdict reached by the Las Vegas jurors.

DEFENSE SAYS VERDICT 'NOT A SHOCK'

"The verdict was not a shock. We knew it going in, there was a lot of baggage," he said.

Galanter said the jurors' answers on questionnaires indicated that they were predisposed to find Simpson guilty.

Members of the jury, who worked well into the night before returning their unanimous guilty verdicts on all 12 counts against both defendants, told the judge they would not speak to reporters. Prosecutors also declined to address the media.

Simpson and Stewart were convicted of conspiracy, burglary, kidnapping, robbery and assault.

The case centered on an armed raid by Simpson and five cohorts on a pair of sports memorabilia dealers at the Palace Station hotel and casino in September 2007.

Witnesses said the men stormed into room 1203 of the hotel and took thousands of dollars' worth of collectibles from dealers Bruce Fromong and Alfred Beardsley at gunpoint.

Defense lawyers argued that Simpson went to the hotel only to retrieve personal mementos that were stolen from him following his murder trial and was unaware that two of his sidekicks were armed.

Four of the other men originally charged in the case have agreed to plead guilty and all took the witness stand for the prosecution during nearly three weeks of testimony that concluded on Wednesday.

Neither Simpson nor Stewart testified in their own defense.

Simpson's ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman were found stabbed and slashed to death on June 12, 1994, and the popular former athlete known as "The Juice" was charged.

Simpson was found not guilty on October 3, 1995 at the end of a yearlong trial that was carried live gavel-to-gavel on U.S. television and transfixed much of the world.

A civil court jury later found Simpson liable for the deaths and ordered him to pay $33.5 million in damages to the victims' families, a judgment that remains largely unpaid.

The irony of the decision coming on the anniversary of the deaths of his victims was not lost on the judge. I heard that she really pressed the jury to bring in the verdict on that day. Of course the howls of his supporters has already started. OJ is a worm.

The verdict is not a surprise. OJ knew his time had come. Now let us wait for the sentencing...this should be interesting, whats the bet the judge gives him the maximum? She/he is probably gonna sentence him for the screwup the jury made 13 years ago.

That is what his lawyers are claiming. OJ was tried for murder, not armed robbery.

I think the judge will be baised. I think she'll hand down a sentence not fitting for his crime, simply because she feels he should be punished for not being convicted the first time.

If she sentences him based on the standard sentencing guidelines for a first time offender and nothing more he will still probably die of old age in jail.

I realize the judicial system is different in Australia MWS. It's much more lenient here in Norway too. In the US however, they don't mess around in cases like this, particulary in states like Nevada.

The crimes he has been found guilty of can bring a life sentence

One of the charges (Armed robbery) carries a 2 year minimum. The kidnapping charge is 5-30 years.

Sadly there was DNA evidence at the Nicole Simpson murder scene that was destroyed. She was found and photographed face down. On her back were blood splatters that were consistant with someone who was bleeding and standing directly above her body. However the authorities turned her over to photograph her front and the blood evidence was compromised. If you remember OJ Simpson did have a wound to his hand which he claimed was from a broken glass.

I hope he gets life.

If he hadn't had those scumbags on his other jury he would have been sentenced to death that time. they said they would not convict him for any reason.

Interesting thing is he stopped being black years ago.

Kidnapping is an automatic life sentence. It was called the Lindburg act.

Kidnapping is an automatic life sentence. It was called the Lindburg act.

The Lindbergh Act is a federal law (48 Stat. 781) that makes it a crime to kidnap—for ransom, reward, or otherwise—and transport a victim from one state to another or to a foreign country, except in the case of a minor abducted by his or her parent.

The Lindbergh law provides that if the victim is not released within twenty-four hours after being KIDNAPPED, there is a rebuttable presumption that he or she has been transported in interstate or foreign commerce.

The punishment for violation of the Lindbergh Act is imprisonment for a term of years or for life.

Too bad this doesn't apply to simpson.

From the NY Times:

Judge Jackie Glass of District Court ordered Mr. Simpson remanded into custody until Dec. 5, when she is scheduled to sentence him. The most serious charges, two counts of kidnapping with a deadly weapon, carry a minimum sentence of 15 years to life with parole possible after five years. The dozen charges, which include robbery, burglary, conspiracy, assault and coercion, could carry a total minimum sentence of more than 50 years in prison if sentenced consecutively.

Although I'd like to see him get the 50 years, my bet is that he's sentenced to 15 years to life with parole possible after 5 years. I doubt he would get the parole at that point. Of course we have to wade through the appeal process first.

It won't matter what the sentence is - OJ will not live to see it carried out. It'll either be so long he'll rot in jail or he'll serve the kind of 'abbreviated' sentence most scumbags get. Jeffery Dahmer only 'served' two years of his sentence before jailhouse justice was served.

He never should have been able to walk free these last 13 years!

I read that the state intends to keep OJ isolated from the prison population as long as he is there. They won't be responsible for him getting killed. :tb
