I was at mp3.com last night and picked up a cookie. irritating. so, I had a wild and crazy thought about me doing footwork for some market research department, or subcontractor, and , I wonder, how many people actually know they're still carrying these things around? Just delete them at the end of a session or what?

So, each cookie has a value, it's along for the ride, like a parasite that doesn't eat much. Call it a nickel for the sake of argument. And what's an mp3 worth, in terms of cost to make, etc.

so, if a cookie has value, why am I being required to carry it around from place to place. It's virtual, it means nothing, so ...ah, it actually is worth nothing. Yet someone is being paid to accumulate the data that I'm supplying, and I don't get an nth degree of a penny?

Pennies. like the carry over from pocket change, or the uptick down tick when you cash your paycheck, are worth how much to the banks that are using it for currency trades?

Pennies accumulate, so should my nth. At what point am I performing work which I'm not being paid for and sometimes am not even being told that I am doing? It ain't out of the goodness of my heart, you can be sure, no one asked my permission and I paid cash for the computer, lock stock and barrel. Am I supposed to have bought a computer that isn't functional? No.

Did I sign some type of agreement that purchasing this computer may require me to perform small tasks as a result of ownership? That would be like ford asking me to pick up some parts for them on the way home? Illogical in the real world is illogical when extrapolated to cyberspace. I want my nickel, plus interest, and I imagine so would a few other people.

I agree....like the sign they put on your car when you buy it from a lot...I mean, come on. If I am advertising your business, you can darn well pay me the car payment per month to do it!!

Let's start a grassroots movement....I like this!!

Hi, ms parker, I was thinking along the lines of a class action suit, and donating my share of the settlement to the legal group willing to take on the project. Maybe an online petition could get started with others willing to donate in order to compensate for valuable legal volunteer work, and any left over proceeds made available to those who are currently being prosecuted for illegal downloads.

And I can switch off my ac if I want to impove gas mileage, but I can't regulate the carbon emissions. I can set a lot of things if I'm willing to spend the time and energy to relearn software every time I buy a different cpu standard. But I also remember when you could buy a vw bug and learn how to fix it with a manual no more than 1 inch thick.

If you want things done then it take time and energy, plus doing what I said is not difficult, time consuming, or enery absorbing.

You first click on the start button then click on control panel, click on internet options, click on privacy, click on advanced, check the Override automatic cookie handling, then select the option that you want.

Sure I want change done. I want corporateions to stop taking advantage of humans. Whether I carry cookies or not, whether I can reset my browser or not isn't the poimt. The point is that there are a huge number of people who carry cookies around because it's more inconvenient to get rid of them on a daily bnasis than to let the little parasites have afree ride. Which is why I would make this a class action. A human class action against a corporate non-entity if you will.

Whatever, you thing a class action against a corp for advertising will actually work?

That is basiclly what cookies are; advertising.

Nay, actually cookies aren't as big a problem as they used to be, so I doubt if it would generate the kind of settlement I was thinking of. Cookies are still a research tool, a way of tracking buying trends, etc, but they actually get filtererd out so easily by the most basic security programs, I think most sites don't bother with them anymore.
