Who has one, why do you like it?
I am thinking of going with the:

Either the Garmin or the Tom Tom aer good choices, stay away from the others.
I have a Tom Tom 1 3rd gen and I love it. Never had a problem with it and it is very user friendly.

Seems kind of expensive. I purchased a Tom-Tom about three months ago and it was $149 @ Circuit City. I am happy with the purchase. There have been times it has gotten me lost only because I am travelling into new sub-divisions and it hasn't been up-dated. Other than that, no complaints.
That would be the same one I have then.

I'm in a new area. I'll be carting the kids to school soon and hopefully be working by Halloween. I need to know the area, there's a bunch of little towns all over. :shrug

When I purchased mine, I called thier toll free help line and they also walked me through downloading the lastest program to the unit. What surprises me is there is no monthy fee.

Thanks, Nixon.
The hubby doesn't think I need one.
But, with him being gone, I would like to get my bearings on the area. There is alot of bad pockets of crime in the area.
I just bought the Garmin 760 online at Circuit City. It lists for $599 but when you go into the cart it's only $399.

It looks good and has good reviews! I'd like one, but can't justify it.

I would normally agree with that. :snicker.
But, we just moved to NC from AZ on June 19. I have to travel to "the triangle" for medical appts for the the kids and such. I am a confident driver, but when I'm in new surrondings I do second guess myself. I didn't need a GPS in AZ, but in NC, the area so large, I really do need one. Plus, I'm wasting alot of ink on mapquest. :lmao

My older son got something with his Verizon service. I can't tell you anymore than that about what he has. He needs it because he travels for his work and he was always getting lost and ending up in bad areas when he went to a new town.
I would really like to have a Tom-Tom. We are thinking of getting one.

He had a flat tire on the interstate in Gary, Indiana, at 8:30 at night. The police told him to just stay in his car till they got there.

Ohhhh...I heard that's about the worse it can get. :scared
We've driven through Gary several times on our way from MI to Chicago, but never stopped. :scared.

Nothing against people having a GPS system but is the simple art of map reading and comprehending a dying art? Give me a map and a destination and I can get there no matter where it is.

I hear that. I have GPS software on my PDA but I never use it. If I need directions I just print out a map from the internet.

I'm wasting too much ink on mapquest. :lmao
I will feel safer and more confident once I get it.
Plus I like the fact it's voice activated and I won't have to hold onto my cell phone either. The kids are excited about the MP3 player in it. :shrug
Once school starts and I start work, I'll be on the road a minimum of 3 hours a day.

Exactly. Safer, and more confident.
Besides, in NC we have a lot of "future Route --", we learned this when we moved down here and was following a map. Had to call a friend in NY to send me via email to my phone directions to our new house! :lmao

I miss those days a lot.
What I do now is use AAA tripticks, they are a detailed route of where you are going and they are updated maps.

That is such a long commute. I go one way from home to work about 8 miles. It usually takes about 20 minutes.

I will have to take the kids to and from school everyday, school of choice, of course. I had to do it for 3 years in GA, but that's when gas was only a high of $1.87. :( Anyway, I am looking forward to getting my GPS so I don't get lost as often.
