NEW YORK (Reuters) - NYSE Group Inc. said on Friday the New York Stock Exchange will be closed on January 2 to mark the death of former U.S. President Gerald Ford.
On Thursday, President George W. Bush declared January 2 a national day of mourning for Ford, who died this week, with all federal offices to be closed on Tuesday.
"My NYSE Group colleagues and I join all Americans in mourning the loss of President Ford, a man of great integrity and vision, and a dedicated public servant," said NYSE Group Chief Executive John Thain. "It is appropriate that we honor President Ford and celebrate the life of a truly great American."
The exchanges have historically closed on a national day of mourning for a U.S. president, such as in June 2004, after the death of President Ronald Reagan.
The Nasdaq Stock Market, the other major U.S. stock market, said Thursday it will be closed on January 2.
With New Year's Day a U.S. holiday on Monday, the exchanges will be commemorating Ford in an already shortened week. That had caused speculation the exchanges would be reluctant to close for a second straight day.
