A good read.

Conservatives even applied this critique to one of the most dangerous moments in human history: the Cuban missile crisis, during which the United States and the Soviet Union nearly came to nuclear blows over Moscow's deployment of missiles 90 miles off the American coast. When President Kennedy successfully negotiated a peaceful conclusion to the crisis, conservative icon Barry Goldwater protested that he had appeased the Soviets by promising not to invade Cuba if they backed down.

The Soviets withdrew their missiles in what was widely seen as a humiliation to Khrushchev, but Goldwater believed that Kennedy's diplomacy gave "the communists one of their greatest victories in their race for world power that they have enjoyed to date." To Goldwater, it was far preferable to risk nuclear war with the Soviets than to give up our right to roll back Fidel Castro.

When the people you want to negotiate with are willing to die unless they get what they want, and what they want is for you to convert or die, what is there to talk about other than appeasing them?

Did you read the article?

Apparently not.

JG, we have repeatedly negotiated with terrorist states while under Publican leadership.

The Publicans lost this on substance as soon as they opened their mouths.

They rely on the general ignorance of the public to get by with this claim. Educated people know that they are completely full of shit.

Not once has anyone knocked on my front door and asked me to convert to Islam. Never has that happened. According to the White House, "they" hate us because of our freedoms. More fucking bullshit spoon fed to the American public.

This is a moronic talking point by the GOP that is rather stupid. Chris Mathews had fun with a gop goon who was too stupid to know the difference between talking and appeasement. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mpAvSSQ9OU

Damn...JG....what the fuck happened to you? You are really taking the conversation to a low level with your "talking points" comments of late. There was a time when you at least tried.

The people doing the negotiating on the part of Iran or Hamas are most certainly not willing to die....they may be willing to allow a number of their constituents to die.....but the people in charge? No. The nastiest of "them" ( Bin Laden et. al. ) will, in fact, go to great lengths to remain alive.

When it is put that way....are they really that much different from the folks in charge over here?

C'mon...step it up a notch already.

James Baker is a mean SOB but knows what he is talking about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYC3jVaDDEg Talking to someone is not appeasement unless one is an idiot (i.e. bush or mc :cane)

Matthews gave that guy such a workout and the Gullible Old Party goon did not have a clue what appeasement meant.
It would have been funny except that it is sad in this day of easily acquired information (as shown by posters here) that a person chooses to dummy down so that he can continue to kiss up to the dummies in the White House.

Again, negotiations is not appeasement unless one is an idiot.
