View Full Version : CLINTON HAS CAJONES

INDIANAPOLIS — Evan Bayh was halfway through telling a story about "a steelworker in Northern Indiana" on stage beside his Senate colleague, Hillary Clinton.

"Anybody know what he said?" Bayh asked at the Saturday rally, starting to quote the
steelworker: "Our candidate is the one in the race –."

Clinton cut him off with a whisper and an urgent gesture.

"She doesn't want me to go there,” Bayh told the crowd. “OK. I won't. Alright, alright.”

Clinton may not like the story, but her supporters love it: The sheet metal workers union official in Portage, Indiana cited by Bayh had praised her "testicular fortitude" before lighting into unnamed "Gucci wearing, latte-drinking" opponents.

Also last week, a New York Post columnist wrote that she'd won the "cojones primary."

And James Carville, the Clintons' ubiquitous former aide, booster, and informal adviser made
the point even more vividly, giving Clinton a two-gonad edge on her primary rival, Senator Barack Obama.
"If she gave him one of her cojones, they'd both have two," Carville said.

The ballsy fighter is the newest persona for a woman whom public life has taken from a liberal policy wonk to a devoted wife, from a wronged woman to a cerebral senator.

Just as this campaign, a campaign that began obsessed with showing strength, was revived with a show of vulnerability in New Hampshire. Last fall, she was the ultimate wonk; this spring, she's emerged as a beer-swigging, never-say-die populist—proud of her toughness above all, mocking out-of-touch elites and deriding economists as a class.

Skeptics might say these kaleidoscopic transformations have been, themselves, a bit ballsy.

Now, the candidate who would be the first woman president is being described as, metaphorically, a man.

Her pitch to voters has followed a similar arc: She began as a tough-minded centrist with a feminist appeal to women across the spectrum of class and race. But as her rival, Senator Barack Obama, took control of the race in January and solidified a base of African-American and well-educated voters, Clinton slid into the countervailing space: tribune of the working class.

After John Edwards dropped out at the end of January, former Clinton adviser Paul Begala publicly suggested that she slip into his political space.

"If I were her, I would take John Edwards' message," Begala said in February. "Take that message and use it as a battering ram."

In Ohio, Clinton took on a centerpiece of her husband's legacy casting herself – in the face of an ambiguous record – as a fierce foe of of the NAFTA trade pact, and attacking Obama bitterly for one of his advisor's' suggestion that his opposition to free trade wasn't entirely sincere.

But Clinton, supporters say, was still caught between her new populism and her historic affinity to centrist economic policies and warmth toward big business—stances embodied by her chief
strategist, Mark Penn.

Penn was forced from his pre-eminent role in the campaign in early April, and his replacements –pollster Geoff Garin and communications director Howard Wolfson – have pushed her to make a call for a summer gas tax holiday a centerpiece of her campaign. The idea has been dismissed as meaningless or destructiv the post-Penn era I think we've seen more of Hillary's populist side," Begala told Politico. "The woman who took on the insurance industry lobbyists and the pharmaceutical industry lobbyists is now taking on the oil companies."

Her populism has also borrowed from Edwards a fiercely confrontational, at times conspiratorial, edge — blaming specific groups and maligning forces for voters' woes.

"Why don't we hold these Wall Street money brokers responsible for their role in this recession?" she asked in Indianapolis.

Across Indiana, she's told audiences that "speculators" who "manipulate" oil prices are responsible for doubling the price of gas, and has promised a Justice Department investigation of what she describes as Enron-style manipulation.

She cites as evidence one oil executive who has blamed the high prices on speculative futures trading – though he was referring to legal bets on future demand or instability, not illegal price-fixing.

The other target of her ire: the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, a cartel whose power over oil supply has long resisted other countries desires to force lower prices.

Clinton, in the Chicago suburb of Merillville, told voters she'd break the cartel.

"We're going to go right at OPEC," she said. "They can no longer be a cartel, a monopoly that get together once every couple of months in some conference room in some plush place in the world, they decide how much oil they're going to produce and what price they're going to put
it at," she said, stating a goal that's long eluded the industrialized world, and promising action from the World Trade Organization and the Justice Department.

Her challenge to OPEC drew yet another exasperated expression of disbelief from Obama.

"You say you've been in the White House for eight years, you've had two terms as U.S. senator and haven't said a word about OPEC and now suddenly you're gonna take it right to OPEC," he said at an election-eve rally in Indianapolis Monday.

The results in Indiana and North Carolina Tuesday will reveal whose approach – Clinton's pitch to the gut, or Obama's headier, cooler style – connects more effectively.

But husky-voiced and visibly energized by the shouts her pitch draws from crowds, Clinton explained how she sees her new appeal to reporters on her campaign plane Monday night.

"There is this pent-up frustration that people are just not addressing it in a way that makes sense to them," she said, citing anger at rising gas and food prices. "This economy is demanding a much more tough-minded approach than anybody has come up with yet."

She was also asked about that moment on stage in Indianapolis, and why she had cut off Bayh, beside her in the aisle of the plane, before he could praise her "testicular fortitude."

Both senators professed to have forgotten the moment.

"But we do admire fortitude in our state," said Bayh.

"Yes, we do," said Clinton. "Of all kinds."

Great post, Issac!

BTW - I keep looking but I haven't seen any posts about how Obama a few weeks back had a double digit lead in Indiana and now Clinton has the edge?

Also curious about why with a double digit lead in N. Carolina a few weeks back, there haven't been any posts mentioning how close it appears Clinton might come?

I mean this because a few weeks back Clinton's win in PA was brushed off with lots of discourse on whether one should round up or down to make it double digits and how it didn't mean anything anyway because she had been way further ahead and Obama had closed the gap.

Hmmm... inquiring minds ... :)

She can't overcome Obama's lead, even if she counts Florida, even if she counts Michigan, unless she were to magically get every single vote from now on.

So what is she doing? She's hoping that either the superdelegates will rip the party to shreds by choosing her, or trying to damage Obama so that she can run in 2012.

As I've said about twenty times, I'll vote for her if she is the nominee. PB and YD said the same thing, but don't let reality get in the way of your rant, Ringo. Stick with your usual plan of :bs for attention.

Viki...Obama has never led in the polls in Indiana. The NC race has gotten closer. I'm not sure what kind of posts you want, but the reason for the tightening in NC is clearly the smear campaign put upon Obama by the GOP talking heads and party machine...and given air time by headline hungry cable news stations..

Why do the Republican talking heads and party leaders want Hillary to win so badly? I submit two possibilities:

1) They think McCain will beat her but cannot beat Obama.

2) They know that either Obama or Clinton will beat McCain and they prefer Clinton....because she will play ball with them and the big money will keep rolling in to the same old folks. She is a safer bet for the status quo.............gas tax cuts....obliterate Iran...etc...etc.

I'd be concerned about that GOP support for Clinton if I were you.

Obama has long led in Indiana, Clinton began to narrow the gap after PA. He was expected to win right up until she clinched what is it, four states in a row?

Back to the topic. Here is a great response from Senator Obama to carville's stupid comments. http://thepage.time.com/what-james-carville-said-to-set-obama-off/“Well, you know, James Carville is well-known for spouting off his mouth without always knowing what he’s talking about. And I intend to stay focused on fighting for the American people because what they don’t need is 20 more years of performance art on television. And that’s what James Carville and a lot of those folks are expert at … a lot of talk and not getting things done for the American people.”

It's not fair to read Obama's mind. Someone here said that last week. But now TB can read Clinton's mind. I didn't hear anyone say that wasn't fair. Do you really believe that Clinton wants to destroy the party and lose the election. Because that would probably be the result. I could make just as good a case that Obama wants that. But I don't believe it.

From what I have read of the Republican critizism of Obama it will be as a Gucci wearing, arugula eating far left liberal. Actually, that is something I agree with. The Progressive wing of the Democrats is too far left, and they did destroy the Democratic party before. And people are more conservative now than they were then. I do not believe Obama can win. Its that simple. I think Clinton has a chance, but not much of one. I still see McCain as the next POTUS and it makes me sick to my stomach.

The deniers were plentiful in '00 and '04....and he kicked their asses! But he is making up for it. Remember 2006 where the big fat idiot gave the Democrats control of the Senate. He was amazing. If the Democrats are going to get a filibuster proof senate for a new Democratic president, we need rush to continue being a big fat idiot.

I called your bluff and you chickened out. I do not blame you. The race is over and Senator Obama is now the nominee

btw, your big fat idiot is evidently now telling his stupid followers to vote for Senator Obama. We will see if anyone is stupid enough to listen to rush.

I have witnessed the fact that the Demo Congress has not come close to what they predicted they would do...the Pubs have fouled up their game plan.......May 20th will tell the tale for Demo votes...but i still don't think that the majority of folks will vote for Obie in Nov.

Oh, are you listening to Rush today?:LL

Whatever Rush comes up with will just screw up the Demo Party further than they already are....:LL
It's still a long way to Nov. and I still say that Obie will never serve as POTUS!

Exerpts from the Rush Limbaugh script for May 15th, 2008:

Scenario A: Clinton wins big in West Virginia and takes 23 of the 28 available delegates:

Ladies and gentlemen...I told you that Operation Chaos would continue to play havoc with the Democraps! My loyal apostles are taking care of business out there and making life miserable for Howard Dean and the rest of the limp-wristed libs on that side of the aisle!

-----------------------

Scenario B: Obama wins in West Virginia and Clinton withdraws from the race:

Ladies and gentlemen....it worked! My plan to get Obama nominated by making all the stupid Dems THINK I wanted Hillary to win was a HUGE success! I knew everyone woulod do exactly the OPPOSITE of what I said to do...thereby doing my bidding for me!

Oh, are you listening to Rush today?:No. I just saw that rush is still trying to make himself look meaningful. It is really sad. rush has now admitted that clinton can not win and so is supporting Obama.

Obama is going to kick mclames' senile old ass in November. I am not even sure that mccain will be on thet ticket given his extreme age and senility. The election is a long time for someone as old and feeble as mccain

Wabby....slow down...your brain needs more time. Re-read my post and you wull see that it is a parody piece imagining what Rush will say after the West Virginia primary. The point is that he always has a spin on everything that happens. Get it?

Good question...who IS stupid now?

Joe 6 pack is being denied votes and the party wants eggheads and blacks to control this election!

Pelosi will be right in there too...she DOES NOT want Hillary in there usurping her power!!!!

There is Chaos, jealousy and possible criminal activity within the Demo Party!

A total LIE! He has promised no such thing...
Obie may get the nomination, but it ain't over yet. Even then, I don't think he can pull off the general election! Many don't vote in the primaries...

Has anyone ever won the nomination and lost in their party in Nov.??? What happens if Obie gets the nod and loses to Hillary in Nov.?

Nope, Wabs, the painful truth.

But her campaign is out of money and she will have to drop out unless money starts coming in. The only people stupid enough to contribute to her now are true idiots and fools or people who want to cause problems. You, rush and your fellow idiots are her only hope right not. Again, unless you and the other idiots who listen to rush step up, the Democratic nomination race is all over.
What if people write in Hillary instead of voting for Obie?

But he is making up for it. Remember 2006 where the big fat idiot gave the Democrats control of the Senate. He was amazing. If the Democrats are going to get a filibuster proof senate for a new Democratic president, we need rush to continue being a big fat idiot.
Rush may have had something to do with that, but overall, very little.....I mean, do you think many libs actualkly listen to Rush?

I think what this country needs is a Write In Hillary campaign if obie gets the nomination!

Now THAT is something I may work on, in lieu of cash contributions. My best venue for that would be Rush....I will email him and suggest it!

You are in denial of the fact that rush is a big fat idiot who gave the Democrats control of the Senate due to his stupid antics with respect to the Michael J. Fox commercial. Given that rush is and remains an idiot, I am counting on him to do something stupid again and to give the Democrats a couple more Senate seats.
