Will high food prices shortchange students on nutrition?

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Rising food prices are making it harder for schools to cook up ways to give kids the nutrition they need.

Right now, they’re taking shortcuts and shuffling ingredients to make up the difference, but that’s only a short-term solution with long-term consequences on the horizon.

“I’ve been in school service for 27 years and this is the worse it’s ever been,” said Sara Gasiorowski, food service director for Wayne Township Schools in Indianapolis. “I have never seen food prices jump up so far.”

Gasiorowski said kids will still get nutritious meals, but her kitchen staff could suffer as a result. Three days have already been shaved off the 191-day work year because of food inflation, she said, and if it gets any worse, lay-offs are “a possibility.”

The schools in Wash. and Ore. all ready serve junk food to the kids to save money. I don't know how they can find any cheaper food.

Schools were designed to do ONE thing, and thats was educate, NUTRITIONAL NEEDS were dealt with at HOME!
It all began with a school LUNCH program and escalated into a Hot Meal along with Breakfast!! Then TONS AND TONS of food were thrown out and wasted DAILY across America!!

You wouldn't believe the bragging and giggling from the Entitlement Gang over how they need to only throw the kids a sandwich or soup for supper, as the TAXPAYER fed their kids for them!!!

Tighten the SHIP, find some RESPONSIBILITY, as unfortunately for some of these kids its ALL they get, because Social Service is to damned Lazy to check on their Welfare adn to reluctant to do anything to the WORTHLESS Parents!!

The school nutrition program was established to protect the health of the youth of the nation, which is a national security issue, and it is of importance to our economy to have healthy citizens who are not sick all the time from nutrition related illnesses, and who have the strength to work all day. :semmy

Historically, the governments of Europe only decided to let the masses have sufficient food to stay alive and be somewhat healthy because the needs of war changed. They needed many young, healthy soldiers (cannon fodder), who could carry 40 pounds for miles to fight their wars. And they had to feed the masses to get them.

If the government is willing to feed them today, its because it is in the governments interest.

2. There was some, not a lot, but some basis for going to war with Japan and Germany. The Japanese did attack us, but because we embargoed them and that is an act of war. If taking care of the needs of the children of our country means I called a Communist by the ill-informed, then I can handle that. School lunch programs have helped children to be strong and healthy.
Since the poor and those who don't have a strong family background are the base for the war we are fighting now, we had better be proud that America fed its children.
