Israel Tank Shell Kills Palestinian Family in Gaza

Five members of a Palestinian family and a passerby have been killed by Israeli tank fire in the Gaza Strip. As Robert Berger reports from VOA's Jerusalem Bureau, the incident could torpedo efforts for a ceasefire.

An Israeli tank shell slammed into a Palestinian home in Gaza, killing four children, under six years old, and their mother. The family was eating breakfast when the explosion occurred.

The Israeli army said it used tanks and aircraft to target Palestinian gunmen in an area often used to fire rockets. A tank shell apparently went astray and struck the home.

The Islamic militant group Hamas, which rules Gaza, promises revenge.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum is calling on all factions to launch attacks against Israel. The response came quickly, as militants in Gaza fired rockets across the border.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak blames Hamas for the incident, saying the army is operating in Gaza because of daily Palestinian rocket attacks on Israeli border communities.

Barak says Israel will continue to strike at Hamas. He accuses the group of using civilians as human shields.

The incident occurred several days after Israel rejected an Egyptian-mediated ceasefire offer from Hamas. Israel says Hamas would use a truce to rearm for the next round of violence. And, now, Hamas says Israel will be responsible for the escalation resulting from what it describes as the "massacre" in Gaza.

- Justifying Israel's planned attack on Iran.

I feel bad for the family but I wonder if the parents of those children support the firing of rockets from their neighborhood?

I have found a very disturbing trend among news shows to air clearly Christian viewpoints. They are making no apologies. They are Christians, support Christians and report Christian viewpoints and dogma. I am offended by it, but I'll bet there are a lot of people here who think it is a wonderful developement.

Of course, Christian dogma means supporting anything that Israel does. I am amazed that it even made the air that children were killed. Any more than reports of the killing of Iraqi children by Ameican troops is reported. I no longer think we have an independent media.

Why should the Holy Land be owned and run by Jews? Shouldn't Jerusalem be sort of an International Holy City like Vatican City? Shouldn't the place belong to Christians ,Muslims and Jews alike?
Israel wants to fence itself in like an all-Jewish resort town on the Mediterranean. What other country can get away with that brand of Apartheid? Israel, as basically a Jewish run State protecting its land only for Jews will not survive in a world which has become a melting pot of cultures, like the United States. The notion recently espoused by Clinton that a US President, without a formal declaration of war, would use nuclear weapons to obliterate Iran is a joke. Before the nuclear fallout from such an insane attack hit Russia, they would have nukes in the air headed for downtown New York, Miami and L.A..
Yeah, lets fight a nuclear war so Israel can bulldoze more Palestinian homes and build housing for their super race. Lets give 'em more of our tax dollars, Billions every year, so that they can fence Palestinians in like they are animals. You wonder why there are "terrorists" or why we were hit on 9/11?
Meanwhile Bush is building permanent military bases in Iraq that we cannot afford. We can no longer afford to prop up a bad idea, and Israel, as an all-Jewish state in the middle of Arabia is definitely a bad idea. The "war on terror" is misguided.
We should be seeking a peaceful solution in the MidEast, even if it means dismantling Israels plans for a Greater Israel for Jews only.
