BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — Violence overnight in Baghdad’s Sadr City killed eight people and wounded 28 others, Iraqi officials said, and insurgent attacks elsewhere killed four people and wounded 18 more.
An Interior Ministry official said U.S. airstrikes and clashes caused the casualties in Sadr City. Two of the dead were children, the official said.
However, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, Lt. Col. Steve Stover denied the report, and said, “There were no ‘fierce’ clashes between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. involving U.S. forces or those Iraqi Security Forces we are partnered with. So we do not know who killed those women and children.”
Fighting in Sadr City, which has been going on for a month, has involved U.S. and Iraqi forces battling Shiite militiamen.
