View Full Version : Linux help please?!?!
I've got an old laptop - no floppy or cd drive - so a fresh install is out of the question. It has Linux on it . . . and I've forgotten the log-in and password for it.
:surf :wall
How can I bypass the log in part?
One of the boys wants to play around with it.
:beg please don't make me have to email my ex to find out! Somebody has to know how to do this!
You might be able to bypass the password by going through the bios and deactivating the password part. :shrug.
You might also be able to reset the CMOS.
Other then that :shrug.
Well an other option is to use a external drive (cd or floppy) and install that way.

What do I look for in the BIOS? I thought BIOS was Windows only? :confused
No every PC has a bios. When you first start the computer you can access it by hitting delete, f5 or whatever the specific key is for you computer.
As for reseting it you need to look up how based on you laptop. You can probably find that by doing a search.

Biker hate to tell you but for most Linux you need bootable copy of the OS to get into single user mode to reset the password. If you're lucky this might work on your computer but I make no promises. http://www.linuxforums.org/security/howto:_recover_root_password.html
It will take you to single user mode and you reset the root password. Follow the instructions closely and goot luck. :)
Thanks, I'm still working on it here and there.
