View Full Version : The prevelance of premarital sex in America

Well, I don't know about y'all, but I'm a firm believer in trying it before ya buy it! :lmao
NEW YORK - More than nine out of 10 Americans, men and women alike, have had premarital sex, according to a new study. The high rates extend even to women born in the 1940s, challenging perceptions that people were more chaste in the past.
"This is reality-check research," said the study's author, Lawrence Finer. "Premarital sex is normal behavior for the vast majority of Americans, and has been for decades."
The study, examining how sexual behavior before marriage has changed over time, was based on interviews conducted with more than 38,000 people — about 33,000 of them women — in 1982, 1988, 1995 and 2002 for the federal National Survey of Family Growth. According to Finer's analysis, 99 percent of the respondents had had sex by age 44, and 95 percent had done so before marriage.
"The data clearly show that the majority of older teens and adults have already had sex before marriage, which calls into question the federal government's funding of abstinence-only-until-marriage programs for 12- to 29-year-olds," Finer said.
Should Federal money be catering to 5% of the public with abstinance programs? Does that really make any financial sense?

Oh come on! You mean you waited?
I won't lie and say that I did. I will say that I regreted not waiting though. If I had it to do over again I would have waited. I fell into peer pressure.
I was being rebelious and made some very unwise choices.
I realized too late how much I cheated my wife out of by not waiting.
Sex is the intimate bond between to people. it involves the phyiscal, spiritual, and emotional parts of a person.
Sex is more than just the "act" of doing it just so you can feel good, it the sealing of a pact between two people.
Also I did not find Christ till after I was married. That also has a lot to do with my current thinking.
God views having sex with someone as the same as being married to them.
Hey just my thoughts, but then again I am a conservative. Hell I make Rush look like a liberal.

I agree that a person's "first time" should be within marriage . . . but personally, I'm beyond the teen years, unable to get pregnant, and have only one partner.
I have a 17 yo daughter, who I talk to about sex regularly. She knows that I prefer that she wait until she's married - but I am also realistic and will put her on bc if necessary. She has agree to wait at least until she's 18 and an adult to make that decision.

Having watched the Communist inspired pocksters, the Hippies, a sex criminal in Office and many trends of todays elders, I can understand their desire to screw the pooch all the time!
We faced the same hormones, only we had morals pounded in our heads, so we never had the chance to openly discuss this at the Mall or here it on the News!
Your going to mess around early, you better have financing and committments, because it is not my job as a taxpayer to raise your kid and you! AYFR is right and Liberals wrong as usual.

Are you trying to tell me that you waited? And that the only person you've ever had sexual relations with was your spouse? Personal question I know, but relevant none the less as I think some folks "morals" don't back up their actions.
It's easy to have morals when one is currently married and partnered, but what was it like for you back in the day? Did you live your morals or develop them later after premarital sex was no longer an issue?
Granted, this isn't really any of my business and I understand if you don't want to answer the questions. :wink

I don't think the feds should support any of these 'education' programs from this to 'just say no' to aids awareness.
No fed dollars for any of this crap.
I would support 1 education program and 1 alone.
Educate the poor that if they graduate highschool, don't do drugs, don't commit other crimes and don't have children until they can care for them on their own, then they will not stay poor.
That is an education program I can get behind.

Those issues could be reduced in number if we handed out more condoms and quit being hypocrits by telling kids to remain abstinate. I'm not saying that abstinance is a bad thing but it is unrealistic to expect it in today's society. The numbers back me up.
Change is needed in sex ed. What we're doing is not working and it's time to reevaluate our federal and state programs. We will save the tax payers money if we prevent unwanted pregnancy and STDs.

I wasn't that valiant, and my marriage was a mistake and we both realized! I however would never allow the State-Govt. to pay for my responsibility, as that is a weak man and little boy that allows that to happen!
This Nation has experienced far to many situations of "Kids raising Kids", which in my books leads to severe child abuse and even murder of the infant! Which gets done more these days Fuc*ing or working?

I find it interesting that even those who don't condone pre-marital sex at this point in their lives engaged in the activity. That kind of backs up the article's high percentages of those engaging in pre-marital sex.
So we get back to the illogical conclusion of the Bush administration financing abstinence until the age of 29 years old. It just doesn't make any sense to spend such money on a program that apparently isn't working.

No...you are not alone! I can't imagine marrying someone without trying it before I buy it. Whether we like it or not sexual compatibilty is extremely important in a marriage. And if two people are unequally matched it is a divorce waiting to happen in my opinion.
As a professed Christian this belief goes against the faith, but I can't help feeling as I do regardless of my chosen faith. I guess I'm counting on the forgiveness part to cover me in this regard. :lol

I have a sister who is also a professed Christian. She goes to church every Sunday. She takes the approach of she will not have sex until she is married and she never has, however she's on her fifth marriage and the fifth isn't looking too good right now either.
Now, I ask you...what is the bigger sin? Pre-marital sex or multiple divorces?

Sparks I am not saying that I think of this in a bubble. I can certainly see an advantage. I know that sex is super important in a marriage. Being sexually attracted to someone is very important and will help your marriage through rough times. Although I am not sure you absolutely need to do the whole act in order to know if there is a serious sexual chemistry with this person.

I can completely see where you are coming from. I know that I am very lucky that this was my life. I know that I will encourage my girls to wait. I would like to see them in a very serious relationship before engaging in sexual relations. I am not naive and know that they will do as they please. To me the "wait until marriage" thing would be more of just don't sleep around. I think if you are just sleeping around that it could be a salvation issue.

You're right Swash...she struggles with that.
Bottom line is that none of us are perfect, we all struggle with something in our life.

I think if someone has that, they are less likely to give it up to just anyone.

Something else I feel may be beneficial is the teaching of the art of self pleasure at a younger age and not making it so taboo. These hormones are natural and its human nature to want to “put out the fire”. Trying to tell someone to ignore these hormones is going to lead to rebellion, especially in a young mind. What is worse, walking in on little Johnny or Suzy taking matters into their own hands or having them come up and say “so and so knocked me up or I knocked up so and so, or I have an STD, etc."?
