This is too funny for words. http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/02/todays_must_read_285.phpYou can understand their exasperation. The administration and Congressional Republicans have done everything in their power to protect the telecoms. They used every legislative tactic at the ready, made every speech or public pronouncement possible, and even engaged in occasional theatrics to drive the point home: Congress will not be passing, and the President will not be signing, any surveillance bill into law that does not give the telecoms retroactive immunity for having helped the administration break the law.

And despite all that, the telecoms still seem not to understand which side their bread is buttered on. "GOP leadership aides are grumbling that their party isn’t getting more political money from the telecommunications industry," Roll Call reports (sub. req.):“It’s quite discouraging,” said one GOP leadership aide, referring to the disparity in giving from the telecommunications industry in light of the FISA debate, but also the broader lack of support for Republicans from the business community in general.

“These companies just won’t do anything,” the aide said. “Even when you have the Democrats working against their bottom line.”...

[A Republican lobbyist said] “There’s no question that from time to time staff, and maybe some Members, say to fellow travelers: ‘Are you giving us some air cover? Are you helping us help you?’”The news is not all bad. The telecoms still give more money to Republicans than to Democrats, Roll Call reports; "Of the four major phone companies, only Sprint is now favoring Democrats overall." The other three, AT&T, Verizon and Qwest, still know their bread and butter, but are favoring Republicans "by slimmer margins than in years past." The reason is clear: with the Dems in power, of course, the telecoms need to spread the wealth.

But the House Republican campaign committee, Roll Call points out, is $29 million poorer than its Democratic counterpart. How are the Republicans supposed to return to power if they can't even convince companies whom they're working to protect from billions of dollars in lawsuits to pony up?

Perhaps, as one GOP leadership aide puts it, the telecoms will find religion again when they realize “these guys are not good for business.”You got to feel sorry for the House republicans. They are staging silly stunts and are not getting paid for their efforts. According to the GOP culture of corruption rules, the telecomns shoud be rewarding the House republicans for the efforts and life is simply not fair.

Poor babies.
This is very encouraging.
The telecoms see the hand writing on the wall.
After that Bush press conference yesterday, I can't see why anyone would believe him. He was off the wall most of the time. If things get any worse, he is going to need a padded wall. Does anyone besides me think he might pass out when eating pretzels again? :wink

A friend of mine who is a nurse said that people who drink alcohol are more likely to choke on foods like pretzels because alcohol has a slightly paralytic effect on the throat.

Just saying. :whistle

No moron, they are working on ptinciples of less government regulation and more market friendly policies, something probably foreign to you.

You just figure that the tellcoms would follow people who agree with them.

But it is dumb to complain in public. But the telcoms know that the republicans will do wht is right even if they don't get the money.

That is actually an indication of not being corrupt.

Maybe it is because the telcoms know that with the dems in charge in the house they better start paying them.

Nonsense.

First of all, you said the Publicans would do the right thing, and the Publicans are not the same as the markets. I know that is their goal, in true fascist fashion, but they haven't succeeded.

Second, it is beyond even your ability to claim that the markets do the right thing without any government regulation. You know that is simply not true. Government regulation is ALL that keeps the stock market profitable.

Third, you know that taxes and regulation do not equal socialism.

This whole impass is about immunity for the telecoms and if you believe bush's lies, then bush is putting the country at risk by not agreeing to an extension of the PAA solely in order to get a benefit for the telecom companies. The only other principle in play here is the expectation by the republicans in congress that they will be rewarded for putting the interests of the telecom companies over the safety of the american public.

TPA, think about what the motivation is here.

What Bush is trying to do his hide his own illegal activities. If the telecoms get investigated, he and his friends will be summoned and possibly indicted.
