This is amusing. http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/178445.phpThe Senate Ethics Committee issued a public letter of admonishment today to Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) for his conduct in connection with his arrest in the airport bathroom and his subsequent conduct.

We have the letter here and details here.

From a quick read through the letter, the Ethics Committee hits him harder than I might have expected. It's not just the arrest they tag him for but his efforts to withdraw his guilty plea. Oh, and there was the matter of him slipping the officer his Senate business card. They didn't like the appearance of that either.
You can read the letter by going to the links above.

This is amusing. The GOP leadership in the Senate threathened Larry Craig with public hearings to try to force him to resign. Craig called the GOP leadership on this bluff and the repugs backed down. Instead of public hearings and resignation we get a fun admonishment letter that the Democrats can use to show the ethics and morality of the GOP. I imagine the the evangelical voters will not be happy here and the Democrats will no doubt figure some way to keep bringing this issue up from time to time.

One of the more interesting things in the letter from Senate Ethics Committe was the fact that it is a violation of Senate rules for Craig to use his campaign funds for legal fees. Craig has spent $240,000 or so from his campaign funds on legal defense and any future payments may be a new and additional ethics violation.

Here is a good summary of the Larry Craig matter in the Senate http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/14581.htmlThere was a point, several months ago, at which Senate Republicans were at a bit of a loss when it came to Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho), who, as you may have heard, had a certain incident in an airport men’s room last year. The GOP caucus desperately wanted him to go away, but struggled to figure out a way to make it happen.

First, Republicans thought they could force him to resign. Craig initially agreed, but eventually reversed course. Second, they considered expulsion, but quickly realized they had nowhere near the number of votes they needed to pull it off.

Finally, the GOP said, “Fine, we’ll use the Senate Ethics Committee to make Craig’s life a living hell. Then he’ll resign.” In theory, this could have worked — an ethics probe could air all of Craig’s dirty laundry, embarrassing him and his family.

But Craig came to believe the Republicans were bluffing — Senate Republicans were even less interested in dragging this sex scandal out and creating a public spectacle than he was.

With that in mind, yesterday, the matter seemed to come to a merciful end.Sen. Larry E. Craig (R-Idaho) was rebuked yesterday by the Senate ethics committee over his conviction for disorderly conduct in an airport men’s restroom, with the panel concluding that he committed the offense and citing him for actions “which [have] reflected discreditably on the Senate.”

Craig was “publicly admonished” in a letter that closed the case without any formal punishment or a public inquiry into the allegations. Despite calls from fellow Republicans for his resignation, Craig has said he will serve out the remainder of his term and retire next January.

Craig said last night, “I am disappointed and strongly disagree with the conclusions” of the committee, adding that he “will continue to serve the people of Idaho.”Left unsaid in Craig’s statement, “And there’s nothing anyone can do about it.”I find it to be very very funny that Senator Craig called the GOP's bluff and won

This is interesting. Larry Craig was admonished by the Senate Ethics Committe which is fine. However this same ethics committee has refused to admonish far stronger cases of breach of the ethical rules of the Senate http://www.citizensforethics.org/node/31001Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) executive director Melanie Sloan released the following statement on the Senate Ethics Committee admonishment of Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) yesterday:"The Senate Ethics Committee found that Larry Craig acted improperly, which of course, was readily apparent. Although a sign that the Ethics Committee is not completely moribund, one has to wonder why only Senator Craig’s conduct merited action. For example, the committee has not taken up the case of Senator David Vitter, who admitted to the crime of soliciting for prostitution and against whom CREW filed a complaint a month before the Craig complaint. Neither has the committee acted on CREW’s March 2007 complaint against Senator Pete Domenici for improperly pressuring a U.S. Attorney. Finally, it took over two years for the committee to dismiss CREW’s 2005 complaint against former Senator Bill Frist on the grounds the committee no longer had jurisdiction over the retired senator. Hypocrisy reigns."It seems that Larry Craig has received harsher treatment compared to the other republican violators of ethics. I wonder why?
