DENVER - A driver who claimed he was a Good Samaritan had his truck crushed Tuesday morning.
On the evening of Oct. 17, 2006, police say Pablo Alcala ran through a stop sign and hit 79-year-old Berdie Friedman while she was crossing the street at the intersection of West Colfax Avenue and North Quitman Street. Friedman was on her way to mail a letter a few blocks from her home. Alcala took Friedman to a nearby bus shelter, saying he did not see the accident, but got her out of harm's way.
Friedman died two weeks later at the hospital.
Police later determined that Alcala had hit Friedman, and arrested him. It was also discovered that Alcala hadn't had a valid driver's license for 12 years and that he had received 12 traffic citations. In July 2007, he was sentenced to two years in prison.
Because of the law governing habitual traffic offenders, Alcala's truck was crushed Tuesday at around 10:30 a.m.
As defined by the Colorado Revised Statutes, habitual traffic offenders have one of the following:
*Three convictions within seven years of: DUI, DWAI, DUID, reckless driving, driving under suspension, revocation or denial, vehicular assault, homicide, manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide or hit and run involving death or personal injuries.
*Ten or more convictions within five years of four-point moving violations.
*Eighteen or more convictions within five years of three-point moving violations.
