Just suppose for a minute that this stimulus tax rebate was optional. And that they didn't have an income cap, but offered it much the same as it is now, but said, that you can check a box on your 2007 return to opt out of receiving it if your belief was that it would do the country better good, by keeping it.
Do you think ANYONE would opt out? Even those who are/were totally against the rebate package working to begin with?
It would be interesting to see. Especially, those that are in the limelight, like celebrities, politicians, etc.
And for that matter, ya know how you get a tax deduction for donating money to charities? What if they offered a tax break to pay an optional donation to the government? I wonder how many celebrities or wealthy citizens would take advantage of getting a tax benefit while helping their country with a DIRECT donation? :shrug
