JACKSONVILLE, FL - A teary-eyed second grader says he learned his lesson about responsibility.

His mother made him stand on a street corner across from his school Wednesday with a sign that read, "I was rude to my teacher. I can't come to school. I'm sorry."

Marcia Harvey said her son just made the honor roll at Brentwood Elementary. But she said he he had a lapse in judgement and acted up in class.

Harvey says she loves her son very much but she wanted to teach him a lesson about making good choices, and the consequences of making bad ones.

"I want him to be successful in life," said Harvey. "This is something I thought of that would maybe get his attention."

It did.

"I got to be good in school," the boy said as tears rolled down his face.

Others noticed and offered encouragement.

A crew picking up garbage drove by and shouted, "Be good, stay in school!"

This is so horrible. WHat a terrible mother. :(

consequences of making bad onesWhat consequence is that? That he will never be good enough. He is in 2nd grade and was rude to the teacher. Give me a break.

I don't think that damaging his self worth is a fitting punishment.

Shame on that mother.

I agree. We gave up public humilitation as a form of punishment when we got rid of the stocks.

This kid is gonna have some serious issues. Give him a few more years and he'll be registered as a Republican.

That is really sad. :( That Mother needs a lesson on choices more so than her small child does!

I make my kids write notes of apology - which would have been more fitting here. Have him read it in front of the class, if he was rude in front of the class.

The mother should have to stand on a corner with a sign that read " I am a perfectionist mom and my kids aren't good enough for me."

Kudos to the mom! Today's kids need tough love not pampering! Children need to be responsible for their OWN actions.

My daughter's friend racked up a $600 phone bill by calling people from the computer game, Maple Leaf Story. Her parents turned off her cell phone, she's grounded from social and the home phone for a month, and they're selling her computer on ebay! KUDOS TO THE PARENTS! It's just like the parents who found booze in their kids' car and sold the car. :woot
