I am a political junkie and the state of the union addresses are usually the source of either some attention or concern by the country. For the Democrats, they have been an excuse for some fun drinking games where one could take a drink everytime bush said a designated and predictable word (terrarist, nukular, etc).
This SOTU is the biggest non-event that I have seen. There is little press coverage and it appears that no one really cares what bush's opinion on the State of the Union is because he is such a lame duck.
I may watch the SOTU tonight not for the drinking game (I still have not seen a good one yet) but just to pity bush. He is truly a lame duck with no power or authority left for this remaining year.

Interesting that so many of us just can't stomach the monkey boy any longer. I try and watch him, but he is such a buffoon, illiterate, exasperating butt head, 60 seconds is about my limit.
Remember how Nixon 'lost it' at the end, so hated by so many. That kind of mental energy flows all over the recipient, I think that drove Nixon over the edge, and now Bush as well. Or is he just too stupid to get any truth between those . . . . ears.
SOTUL - L for lies. I just can't listen anymore.

I wish - but for most of those morons -they're there so they can be seen. Back when the idiot - I mean Cynthia McKinney - was in Congress, she was front and center leaping out to hug George at every SOTU address - even if not ten minutes earlier she'd blasted him for something else.
Pandering comes in a lot of forms. The SOTU address is the grand mac daddy of political pandering!

Here is a nice e-mail about the SOTU from Representative Wexler (D-FL). Dear,
Tonight, President Bush will issue what will thankfully be his final State of the Union address; but, little of what he says can be trusted.
For the past seven years, we have watched as America has moved steadily backwards. We have become a nation that is less free and less fair. We have become a nation that no longer values the right to privacy and has tragically retreated from our cherished foundations.
Nothing George W. Bush says tonight will change the sad reality of the America he has given us:
- Our economy teeters on the edge of recession while property taxes spike and homeowners are losing their homes at record levels;
- Our educational system is broken and our teachers are abandoned;
- Our roads and bridges languish in disrepair, while our borders and ports remain under-inspected and insecure;
- Our most basic ideals about law and justice have been tossed out, as our President uses fear to pursue his reckless agenda; and
- We remain mired in Iraq – a war built on lies and manipulated intelligence.
Nowhere in American history - not even Watergate - have we been confronted with an Administration so ambivalent about the truth and established law. A recent nonpartisan study found that the Bush Administration lied over 900 times in the prelude to the Iraq war, misleading us on nearly every critical issue.
It is time that we reclaim this country and undue the damage wrought by George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.
Democrats in Congress must stand up and lead – no matter the cost.
We need to finally act on the promises of the 2006 election and stop at nothing to bring our troops home from the Iraq. If we do not act Bush will install a permanent US presence in Iraq and John McCain's vision of a 100 year US occupation will become reality. (Click here to read my recent editorial on the Failure of the Bush Surge in Iraq.)
It is time that we faced up to our global responsibilities and begin to prevent global warming. In the richest nation on earth, it is long past time that we provide health insurance to every single American.
We must aggressively pursue impeachment hearings for Vice President Dick Cheney due to serious allegations of abuse of power including illegal wiretapping, torture, and deliberate lies to bring us to war. (Click here to see my recent speech on the floor of the House calling for impeachment hearings).
Fifteen members of Congress - including 4 Judiciary Committee members - have already joined my call to Chairman Conyers for impeachment hearings and more are joining each day: (Click here to see the letter I am sending to Congressman Conyers and the list of members who have joined as signatories.)
Bush Administration officials and cabinet members must answer questions - on the record - regarding illegal wiretapping, torture, and what I perceive as deliberate, knowing lies to the American people in an effort to bring us to war in Iraq.
Impeachment hearings are essential because the Administration has recklessly used claims of executive privilege to block key witnesses from testifying. Impeachment hearings could force the Administration to drop their executive privilege claims and we would then finally get the answers this nation deserves. We are making progress with over 216,000 Americans already registering their support at WexlerWantsHearings.com.
We must rededicate ourselves to the core values of this nation and finally deliver to the American people the change they demanded when they stood up and voted for Democrats in 2006.
I value your support, and I am thankful for your patriotism.
Together, we can begin to restore the state of our Union.
With warm regards,
Congressman Robert Wexler

He has never been willing to take responsibility for anything including shooting his friend in the face ~ it was the friends fault.
I heard Bush was going to blame the Democratic Congress, who have served less than a year with only a slight majority, for any of his promises that he has failed to accomplish.
If he only listed his accomplishments it would truly be a short speech.

Two things to be looking out for.
1. He said he would propose about 18 billion dollars in cuts by slashing certain programs. I wonder what he wants to cut.
2. He is going to issue and EO directing the powers that be to withhold funds that have been added to by way of earmarks to some legislation unless it's been openly debated. I'm no fan of earmarks but the whole idea of him using an EO to affect funding that has been approved by congress strikes me as unconstitutional.

I believe the American people have pretty much moved beyond this Administration. They’ve moved on to the Presidential campaign – wondering who’s going to be the next President, and what does the future hold?
In a sense, this was a wrap-up speech. It was the beginning of the end to eight very tough years.”

Here is John Edwards' reaction to this weak speech. http://www.johnedwards.com/news/headlines/20080128-sotu/Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Tonight, Senator John Edwards released the following statement in response to President Bush's State of the Union address:
"The president tonight renewed his call for an economic recovery plan. But the plan he and Congress have offered leaves out tens of millions of Americans who need help the most. This plan would take months to have any impact, and the people I meet everyday on the campaign trail do not have months to wait. These people are hurting now and need this help now. Over the past seven years, typical workers' paychecks have failed to keep up with inflation, millions of families are facing the loss of their homes to foreclosures, health insurance premiums have doubled, and families are spending $1,000 more a year on gasoline. The State of the Union may be interesting political theater, but until we find bold solutions to the challenges facing the country, we will be stuck with the same old small, Washington answers.
"And in the chamber of the House of Representatives where the president speaks, even though this Congress stopped listening to him a while ago, they will still applaud and cheer him. The truth is that Washington is out of touch with what's happening across the country. Between now and January of 2009, Democrats must stand up to this president, stand up for what's right, so he does not continue to forget about the middle class in this country."

Ellen Tauscher, D-Walnut Creek. "We're more than sick and tired; we're scared and frightened for the prospect of working families in this country and our national security and competitiveness."
Tauscher ridiculed Bush's address. "Apparently the president is suffering with the rest of Hollywood from the writer's strike."bush needs to take action to end the writers strike so that he can get some new material.

This is amusing. The endorsement by Senator Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy overshadowed the SOTU and got far more press coverage. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/29/washington/29watch.html?_r=1&ei=5088&en=3bb6d3a8c333fd2a&ex=1359349200&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&adxnnlx=1201640412-CY+i8ALyX7CjmuR/oC4A6wThe day began in Camelot and ended in Southfork.
Viewers on Monday were treated to a rare look at three dynasties working out their psychodramas at once: In his final State of the Union address, President Bush, the rebel Texan who defied his father, struggled to avoid the gloom of recession that darkened his father’s final days in the Oval Office. On the campaign trail, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton tried to patch over the pricklier parts of her husband’s legacy, while in Washington, the Kennedy clan sought vindication — and renewed vigor — by passing the torch to an adopted heir......
His words, moreover, were eclipsed by the image of Caroline Kennedy and Senator Edward M. Kennedy anointing Senator Barack Obama as the true successor to John F. Kennedy. That tableau from a rally at American University, shown over and over throughout the day, was powerful and also poignant — the camera showed all too vividly that in passing the torch to Mr. Obama, the patriarch of the Kennedy clan was bypassing his own scions.
Representative Patrick J. Kennedy, Democrat of Rhode Island, on the stage but not of the moment, kept standing up during his father’s and Mr. Obama’s speeches, as if to sneak into the camera’s frame. At one point while Ms. Kennedy was speaking, Senator Kennedy leaned toward Mr. Obama, who put both his arms around the senator as the two men shared a joke. Young Mr. Kennedy leaned over to try to hear their conversation, but was ignored.
The endorsement was a boon to Mr. Obama, of course, but it also served the Kennedy family interests, lending the fading clan a flash of power — and moral standing — that these days is most evident at family funerals. So many members of the younger generation of Kennedys are dead or disqualified; the dynasty that bestowed its mystique and political influence on Mr. Obama was also feeding on his youth and charisma.
Television news reports were understandably intoxicated by the rush of nostalgia — and evocative images. On ABC’s “World News,” a reporter noted solemnly, “the audacity of hope had its rendezvous with destiny.” When Mr. Obama was described as a “son of Camelot,” ABC’s screen was filled by a black-and-white clip of President Kennedy lifting young John-John in his arms.
No cable network was as excited as MSNBC. In the long cable countdown to the endorsement, CNN and Fox News switched to other campaigns — showing Mrs. Clinton campaigning (without her husband) in Connecticut, and Mitt Romney and Senator John McCain sparring in Florida. MSNBC wouldn’t leave the auditorium of American University and instead kept its camera trained on an empty stage — like a child stubbornly glued to the window, waiting for Daddy to come home.
There was magic in the Kennedy images, and also a tinge of malice: Throughout the day, cable news contrasted the pictures of Mr. Obama standing arm and arm with Senator Kennedy and his niece, with old clips of the Clintons back when they enjoyed the favor of Senator Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis — in baseball caps boating off Martha’s Vineyard and striding with Kennedy family members across the White House lawn.

This is amusing. bush's SOTU farce was such a non-event that even Brittany Spears got more attention http://thinkprogress.org/2008/01/30/britney-spears-makes-more-news-than-bush/Despite the economy drawing “heavy coverage and widespread interest” last week, Americans and the news media see President Bush as a non-story, behind Britney Spears. The Pew Research Center reports: When asked to name the person they had heard the most about in the news lately, 24% of the public named Obama and 23% named Clinton. In a week when he proposed a major economic stimulus plan, just 5% of Americans named George Bush as the person they had heard the most about. About twice as many (11%) named Hollywood actor Heath Ledger, who died last week.
