PLACER COUNTY, Calif., (KXTV) - Sheriff's deputies returned a 6-year-old boy left at a rest stop near Colfax to his parents Saturday evening.
The parents of a 6-year-old boy who left their child at a rest stop near Colfax Saturday afternoon were reunited with him Saturday night, according to a Placer County Sheriff's spokesman.
The boy named Thomas was found by another motorist at the Gold Run rest area along westbound Interstate 80 near Colfax around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, a Placer County Sheriff's representative said.
Thomas told deputies that his parents left him when the family's white van stopped at the rest area at approximately 3:30 p.m. The family has 14 children, nine boys and five girls, and did not discover Thomas was still in the rest stop bathroom until well after they got home.
"There's nothing to say the child was abandoned," said Placer County Sheriff's Lt. Jeff Ausnow. "Everything points to (the parents) were tired and accidentally left without their child, as hard as that can be to imagine."
The parents contacted the Placer County Sheriff's Department at 8 p.m. Saturday after putting some of their children to bed at their Sacramento County home and realizing Thomas was missing. Thomas' parents picked up their son at an undisclosed location about an hour later, Ausnow said.
Ausnow said the case would be forwarded to the Placer County District Attorney's office for review, but said it was unlikely that charges would be filed.
