I love geeks 'n freaks!
:aww
Our Living Language Our word geek is now chiefly associated with student and computer slang; one probably thinks first of a computer geek. In origin, however, it is one of the words American English borrowed from the vocabulary of the circus, which was a much more significant source of entertainment in the United States in the 19th and early 20th century than it is now. Large numbers of traveling circuses left a cultural legacy in various and sometimes unexpected ways. For example, Superman and other comic book superheroes owe much of their look to circus acrobats, who were similarly costumed in capes and tights. The circus sideshow is the source of the word geek, "a performer who engaged in bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken." We also owe the word ballyhoo to the circus; its ultimate origin is unknown, but in the late 1800s it referred to a flamboyant free musical performance conducted outside a circus with the goal of luring customers to buy tickets to the inside shows. Other words and expressions with circus origins include bandwagon (coined by P.T. Barnum in 1855) and Siamese twin.

We had cable and it was awful. But the cable is awful anyway. We couldn't even watch youtubes. They stopped every 10 seconds. I have been thinking about sattelite, but we have a contract with the phone company. Don't you love it that they make you have a contract with them?

I'm still on freakin' dial-up, at home. As soon as the pc is fixed, we'll be moving to something else.

So help me understand since I'm only the mother of geeks, not an actual geek myself -
If I have satellite the download is lightening fast (expensive, but fast) but to send or upload anything it still has to go by phone line which is a pain in the ass for sure.
Am I correct here? Anyone? Geek? Nerd? Neek? Gerd?

It isn't easy to explain but they will tell you it is not a process of going from a to b but your signal going from one modem up to the satelite and from the satelite down to the ISP of the one you are contacting and then the reverse back to your second modem and your computer.
I had it and it was fast but not so fast as to justify "$100.00 per month. Direcway for example (Hughes) you cannot use vonage because while you can transmit perfectly you cannot recieve because of the process I mentioned earlier.
