My 9 year asked why a soccer player can't play in the soccer tournament on a Sunday. Simply, he's a Mormon, now how do I simplify "What is a Mormon?" I read askjeeveskids and googled it, but no straight anwers. Help.

Just explain that people have different religions and beliefs and his does not permit activity on a Sunday / Holy day. Just give him a brief overview of a Mormon's beliefs (http://www.allaboutcults.org/what-do-mormons-believe.htm):

I would tell them that people have all kinds of ways of worshiping the same God .This is the way that the player's family chooses to worship God, by not playing sports on Sunday

LOL, don't ask me, we atheists don't play
the God game so we can play other games. :snicker

I would just tell my child that it is their family day and they don't do other things on that day.

With all due respect Sandi , do you have a 9 yr old ?

I don't but I do have cousins who are Mormon and I was a 9 year old and I was taught to respect other families that play by their own rules. :)

Lots of people do lots of different things. I doubt this is the first time he has come across it.

When you are a mother of a 9 yr old you will understand that what cuts it for a 5 yr old, will not work for a 9 yr old . As a 9 yr. old , you looked at the world as a 9 yr old,not an adult

Sag I was 9 when my cousins didn't wear 2 piece bathing suits. But I do agree that each child is different and her son may need more information.

However, that being said we try not to go out on Sunday and we spend it with family and I am Christian, not Mormon.

:clap That is a good answer, Sag, IMO.

Sandi, I think that you are right, the Mormons put a big emphasis on what I think they call "family home night". Pretty nice concept, isn't it?

It'd be also good to explain, IMHO, that only 1% of the top 1% of any sport makes it to the Pro's. So in the grand scheme of things, being true to your religion or your family, affects more people and enriches their lives over a sporting event any day of the week!:theman

Yeah I know. I played sports alot as a kid. At 12 year's old I was 6'2 and weighed about 200lbs. I played baseball, Basketball and Football from about 5 to 18. I stayed a stud in Baseball, until I turned 13 and found I couldn't hit a curve ball. Basketball I ruled until I began putting on weight for Football in my Sophmore year. In Football I was recruited and got offered some partial scholarships to a couple of local colleges.

I had fun, got some popularity and got some girls. But right now I'm pushing my girls to play an instrument or learn to paint or dance. I can break down a Ball game, give the "X's" and "O's" but what does that mean in life? I've got a buddy that plays piano better today then when he was a kid. My wife knows how to dance and does so gracefully, me - not so much.

So while sports do some great things and can be important, if they're all encompassing the High School jock will look back, when his playing days are fading and realize that life goes on and VERY FEW go to play at the next level. It's better to learn something that stays with you and can improve with time, unless you're very, very good!

But that's just one man's opinion. :deadshot

Deadshot; your post really tug at my heartstrings.

My husband is the headcoach for my daughter's soccer team, there are 2 assistant coaches. Last year the tournament wasn't played until Jan. so in Oct I bought tickets for the Blue Man Group for Nov. They changed the schedule and the tournament was in Nov.. He chose to coach the game instead of going to the concert with us, our daughter was at the concert with us. I had to give his $100 ticket away to a friend of our daughter's. He's missed major doctor's appt (knee injury) for our other daughter to coach games. It's just a 12 and under, recreational soccer team, not a traveling competing team. They did place 1st in the city and now will play against competitive teams in Jan. I tried to explain that to him but he said "I committed to the team, how would it look if I didn't show up?" I know how my daughters and I felt when he didn't show up for us. :sad. Sorry for the ramble.

Oh, forgot Karma did bite my husband in the a$$. :lmao

The game he chose over Blue Man Group after half time of his players spewed all over the field and another got red card for a foul play. THEN :lmao 17 minutes before the end of the game, which was tied, the LIGHTS WENT OUT. :lmao

So they had to replay the last 17 minute on a different day. :lmao It went overtime and had to do 3 shoot outs in the pouring rain. :lmao But, they did win. :)
