"The chemical is diacetyl (dahy-uh-SEET-l). Workers exposed to the airborne chemical in plants making microwave popcorn have been diagnosed with a rare lung disease called bronchiolitis obliterans, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health."

There is no scientific data linking diacetyl to consumer health concerns, because levels are so low. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received one report of a man whose lungs may have been damaged while making popcorn at home. No actual link was made, but the man reportedly ate two bags of extra-buttery popcorn a night and liked to inhale the fumes as it came out of the microwave.
So is that a coincidence?
I'm glad the popcorn makers are revisin' their recipes 'n rectifyin' the health hazards to their employees, but let's not just poo-poo the idea that this stuff may be harmful to consumers. Surely the popcorn producers aren't smellin' liability suits in the air, are they?

I just put my Orville in the brown paper bag and pop away...pure popping corn...no chemicals...
If people actually popped popcorn the RIGHT way, instead of the convienent way then there wouldn't be this problem.

I cannot stand the icky film of microwave popcorn and so we rarely eat it. I make mine in a regular pan with a lid and some canola oil. :)
