View Full Version : "Jesus Came First"

For whatever reason, the ladies on "The View" were discussing ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus this morning. Naturally, talk soon migrated to the topic of religion, and Sherri "I don't know if the world is flat" Shepherd came out to play. More specifically, to spew ignorance and a complete lack of understanding of basic world history! Discussing whether Christians were around during Epicurus' time (Epicurus lived from 341-270 B.C.), Sherri chimed in, "[The Greeks] had Christians 'cause they threw them to the lions."
When Whoopi tried to cautiously navigate her through the timeline of basic world events, saying, "I think this might predate that," Sherri responded, "I don't think anything predated Christians." Joy's attempt to explain the Greek-Roman-Christian chronology was futile, as Sherri insisted, "Jesus came first before them." Sherri's argument was all the more powerful due to her convincing "use your finger to write on the table" trick, but she can't fight the facts. Perhaps if Barbara were on today she would have explained THAT WHOLE B.C. THING (you know, as in, Before Christ).

BTW: I am not defending the ignorance of the statement, but as a practicing theologian I have to wonder: was she (inadvertently) referring to preexistence??? :santa

It's hard to get forgiveness for 'inadvertently' goofing on a discussion board ~ but on a daily TV show.
You must be a good person, Viki ~ Bless your heart!

I danced on the morning that the world was begun,
And I danced on the moon and the stars and the sun,
I came down from Heaven and I danced on the earth,
In Bethlehem I had my birth
Dance, then, where ever you may be
I am the Lord of the Dance said He
And I'll lead you all
Where ever you may be,
I'll lead you all in the dance said He

Isn't it? Very uplifting, and an expression of what Viki was talking about-has Christ always been? Did he dance in the morning when the world was begun?

'Good Baptists' would say no, they don't dance. :lol
Some other 'faiths' out there don't dance
either, but I can't remember which ones.
I like the idea, I love dance 'n so should God.

God didn't give me rhythm so he gave me Baptist parents. Sad thing was, they both loved to dance and felt guilty about it.
Many religions don't believe in dancing and many are changing their beliefs ~ or at least their actions ~ as I said elsewhere, we find a way to get around some of the no-nos of the past. We, as a society in this modern world, seem to be able to choke on the gnats and overlook so many elephants in other places.
I loved the poem (tune).
Tickled my feet so much that I must get back to those things I can do ~ like housework (ugh!)

I never have understood why Southerners have this need to beat around the mulberry bush so much. Give me a fuckin' New Yorker anyday over the passive agressiveness of the South. If someone means "fuck you" I'd much prefer they just say it outright. :shrug

Why do you people bash us Christians so much? We aren't the ones destroying all good family values and everything that is good in this country. The Southern Baptist Convention is the backbone of this country. They have moral fiber. If it wasn't for good people in this country we'd be communists. :)
I read somewhere that Christians have the highest divorce rate. So how is that upholding family values?

I read somewhere that Christians have the highest divorce rate. So how is that upholding family values?
From the Associated Press:
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Baptists have the highest divorce rate of any Christian denomination, and are more likely to get a divorce than atheists and agnostics, according to a national survey.
The survey conducted by Barna Research Group in Ventura, Calif., found that 29 percent of all adult Baptists have been through a divorce. Among Christian groups, only those who attend non-denominational Protestant churches were more likely to be divorced, with a 34 percent divorce rate.
Twenty seven percent of those describing themselves as born-again Christians are currently or have previously been divorced, compared to 24 percent among other adults.
"While it may be alarming to discover that born-again Christians are more likely than others to experience a divorce, that pattern has been in place for quite some time," said George Barna, president of Barna Research Group.
A Birmingham minister, the Rev. Stacy Pickering, said the numbers are skewed because Baptist churches encourage young people to get married -- sometimes before they're ready -- before living together.

Do you ever post any links to substantiate your opinions, or do you just expect us to realize the "wrong" of our heathen ways and repent?
I tried asking questions at a Southern Baptist church in order to understand Christianity better. Ya know what I was told? "Don't worry your pretty little head about that, just go out and convert people."
Oh, and should I also understand from you post that unless you're Christian (preferably Baptist, considering your views on the Southern Baptist Convention) then you're not a good person, lack moral fiber, and do not possess good family values?

Baptist are keeping us from being communists? As a transplant to the south in the middle 60's, everything was run by Baptists for Baptists. This goes from beer and wine sales on Sunday to that there was no restaurants were open on Sunday. That was a pain when your family is living out of a hotel room for 2 wk till we found a home. The Blue laws even forbade the sales of pantyhose.

Yeah, sure. The southern baptists have such good morals. My cousin (a well respected sb in a local town) repeatedly molested one of the girls who were his legal wards. And the congregation of the church supported him and turned against her because she must have 'tempted him' or 'led him on'. Sure. A kid who had thought of him as her father for 10 years, is shown porno films, forced to fondle him and look at his dick for years is finally penetrated and runs in fear. But SHE tempted the good southern baptist. Bullshit. Pure and utter bullshit. Two-faced, self-congratulatory, closeted pervs. Now that's what I call moral fiber. Blech!!!!!!!!!!!
