CNN) -- FBI agents searched the Oxford, Miss., office of prominent plaintiff's attorney Dickie Scruggs on Tuesday in connection with a billing dispute "ancillary" to insurance lawsuits stemming from Hurricane Katrina, his attorney said.

The attorney, Joey Langston, said the document involves the division of fees among lawyers in the lawsuits Scruggs is pursuing against Gulf Coast insurers. Agents spent more than seven hours searching the office, but the document they wanted was not there, Langston told CNN.

A related lawsuit over insurance documents leaked to Scruggs' firm has led to a criminal contempt probe, but Langston said Tuesday's search was not related to that investigation.

Scruggs won national fame for a $250 billion settlement with the tobacco industry in 1997. He is the brother-in-law of Sen. Trent Lott, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, who announced his resignation Monday.

Lott, whose Pascagoula, Miss., home was destroyed by the August 2005 storm, is among Scruggs' clients in a bitterly fought lawsuit against State Farm
