President Bush did make a bad mistake in the war on terrorism. But the
mistake was not his decision to go to war in Iraq

Bush's mistake came in his belief that this country is the same one his
father fought for in WWII. It is not.

Back then, they had just come out of a vicious depression. The country was
steeled by the hardship of that depression, but they still believed
fervently in this country. They knew that the people had elected their
leaders, so it was the people's duty to back those leaders.

Therefore, when the war broke out the people came together, rallied behind,
and stuck with their leaders, whether they had voted for them or not or
whether the war was going badly or not.

And war was just as distasteful and the anguish just as great then as it is
today. Often there were more casualties in one day in WWII than we have had
in the entire Iraq war . But that did not matter. The people stuck with the
President because it was their patriotic duty. Americans put aside their
differences in WWII and worked together to win that war.

Everyone from every strata of society, from young to old pitched in. Small
children pulled little wagons around to gather scrap metal for the war
effort. Grade school students saved their pennies to buy savings stamps for
war bonds to help the effort.

Men who were too old or medically 4F lied about their age or condition
trying their best to join the military. Women doubled their work to keep
things going at home. Harsh rationing of everything from gasoline to soap,
to butter was imposed, yet there was very little complaining.

You never heard prominent people on the radio (there was no TV) belittling
the President. Interestingly enough in those days there were no fat cat
actors and entertainers who ran off to visit and fawn over dictators of
hostile countries and complain to them about our President. Instead, they
made upbeat films and entertained our troops to help the troops' morale. And
a bunch even enlisted.

And imagine this: Teachers in schools actually started the day off with a
Pledge of Allegiance, and with prayers for our country and our troops!

Back then, no newspaper would have dared point out certain weak spots in our
cities where bombs could be set off to cause the maximum damage. No
newspaper would have dared complain about what we were doing to catch spies.

A newspaper would have been laughed out of existence if it had complained
that German or Japanese soldiers were being 'tortured' by being forced to
wear women's underwear, or subjected to interrogation by a woman, or being
scared by a dog or did not have air conditioning.

There were a lot of things different back then. We were not subjected to a
constant bombardment of pornography, perversion and promiscuity in movies or
on radio. We did not have legions of crackheads, dope pushers and armed
gangs roaming our streets.

No, President Bush did not make a mistake in his handling of terrorism. He
made the mistake of believing that we still had the courage and fortitude of
our fathers. He believed that this was still the country that our fathers
fought so dearly to preserve.

It is not the same country. It is now a cross between Sodom and Gomorra and
the land of Oz. We did unite for a short while after 9/11, but our attitude
changed when we found out that defending our country would require some
sacrifices.

We are in great danger. The terrorists are fanatic Muslims. They believe
that it is okay, even their duty, to kill anyone who will not convert to
Islam. It has been estimated that about one third or over three hundred
million Muslims are sympathetic to the terrorists cause...Hitler and Tojo
combined did not have nearly that many potential recruits.

So...we either win it - or lose it - and you ain't gonna like losing.

America is not at war. The military is at war. America is at the mall.

BULLSHIT!

Even hedonistic Americans today would support a war effort if it were necessary. The old 'back in the day' is pure crap.

That attitude is exactly what the author is talking about.

I disagree. I don't think the pampered young skulls full of mush in our high schools and colleges would support anything except iPod or MP3!!! We can extrapolate that out to include most people in their 20s and 30s.....
America is "soft" and lazy and could care less!

If we had a mass foreign invasion today, you would see more people waving white flags than picking up arms to fight. Hell, liberals tell us that "guns are bad, turn them in"...and stupid people all over the country just follow along like sheep and turn in perfectly good weapons to be destroyed. Now, these dimwits can fight with their iPods!
We made fun of the French and how cowardly they are......now they can say the same thing about Americans!

My husband was a member of the generation that went to fight that war. And they were very different people that we are. You are right about that.

If Tommy had gone to the doctor and been told surgery could save his life, but insurance wouldn't pay for it, he would have gone home and died, and never whimpered about the unfairness of it.

If his boss had cut his pay in half and fired half the people in the company, Tommy would have sucked it up, and done the work of two people.

And if the POTUS of the US said go to war, he went. He asked no questions.

Are we worse than them. Hell no! We are far better educated. We have no naivety. We are questioning of everyone.

And the president would not have sent men to die for his rich friends. And the doctor would not have denied Tommy surgery if he couldn't have afforded it. They would work for free back then. And the company he worked for wouldn't have done a dirty thick like that, because the owner cared about his employees.

Issac, I'd like to kiss you!

I still feel that people WILL stand up when it is really necessary. My mom talks about men who didn't want to fight in WWII and the mood in the country up until a certain point in the war. Nothing is as black and white as Wabby's post says it is. If we have a leader who really leads and a reason to follow, this country will stand up. That's my story and I'm stickin to it.

Delusional at best! There is plenty of naivety to go around and you libs only question the folks you don't like or agree with and give a pass to people like Algore! You don't question everyone by a long shot!
You question the motives of Mushariff, because he is being backed by Bush, yet you allow the Butcher Arafat to receive a Nobel Peace Prize, instead of hollering from the roof tops in protest! The same for the terrorist Mandella!
When Clinton lied to the American people on National TV, you said...this is a personal matter, how embarassing for him and his wife, like it was the first time, or the second...etc.
Delusional at best....

The country is ripe for a good orator like a RR. He could talk an eskimo into buying a freezer. I am afraid that any orator who does come along will be another "father to the people" and become the dictator we accuse bush of wanting to be.

Issac, this is a good post, but I disagree with one point-previous Presidents have sent young men to die for the benefit of their rich friends.

However, your point is still strong-the American military is currently functioning as a security force for certain businesses.

It is not the same country. It is now a cross between Sodom and Gomorra and
the land of Oz. We did unite for a short while after 9/11, but our attitude
changed when we found out that defending our country would require some
sacrifices.

Like most of those you quote, this person is in a delusional state. People were ready and willing to make sacrifices after 9/11. We were told to SHOP. SHOP. We were told to go out and SHOP, Wabash.

What does bin Laden repeatedly use as a justification for his terrorist tactics, Wabash? It's not conversion. I know, do you?

So...we either win it - or lose it - and you ain't gonna like losing.
