My first subject Post, so my title was a book and I wasn't sure where to put this, so if needs moved go for it, just leave a clue where it disappeared to?

In Sept, we had a big mobile home park receive 10 FEMA trailers for the many victims of the floods in KS and OK. Well of the 10, only 1 family moved in and they were here for 6 weeks! Similar stories were told in Miami OK, Coffeyville KS and the Ok City-Tulsa areas. While out checking out a lead in the park, I ran across the director in charge of placing these temporary homes, and he told me the people that lost it all were cared for by family and friends, and are trying to rebuild! He told me they set over 300 during Katrina, and he never knew how big a difference there were between people. He said Midwesterners have grit, determination and fortitude, and he told me taht the New Orleans people expected hand outs, would not lift a finger, bitched and whined and were rude as hell!

I said well maybe Katrina was far worse, and he said hell no it was just more concentrated, and the Media wore the damned into the ground trying to score Political points, and blaming everyone but the storm? He said the Midwest disaster received little attention from the media, but many families lost it all and even many lives were lost! I felt pride to be part of the Midwest, and I hope we remain unchanged!

Maybe the people in NO didn't have family and friends in a position to help them?

Hmm...let me clarify my point.

The midwest is generally known for having families that stay in the same area for a long time.

Big cities like N.O. other other urban areas tend to have smaller family units, and often families are there as single family units without the extending family around.

So, it is not unreasonable to think that people living in a big city would be out on their own without family if something happened to them.

Of course, if they DID have extended family in that same area, their family would probably be facing the same hardships they were--OR, because of the poverty of the worst-hit areas of Katrina--they may not have had the means to move and re-establish themselves...and their families wouldn't have the means to support them either.

I mean, being well off enough to care for your family when they are down on their luck doesn't make you 'better' people. It just means you should be more thankful.

Mack, you sure are looking hard for somebody to look down on. What a shame.

Somebody should have told you that people in NOLA probably had families in just as bad a shape as they were, given the scale of the disaster. Duh.

You know you fuckin do gooders, with your noses in the air never stop to think all this guy did was Post an observation of something in his area! He didn't say that NO people were trash or worse people, he was stating that Midwesteners pick themselves up, help each other, start over and don't spend every waking moment whining, bitching, and being an ass because life through them a curveball! Remember too, he was quoting a guy from FEMA who worked Katrina, although I am sure that was way over TB's head, she just wanted to lash out against Mack with her Liberal fangs!!!

New Posters that don't have the LIBERAL thought pattern or speak the meeley mouth bullshit of immature Liberals, are not welcome here! I'll go a step further Midwesteners are a far better group of People who don't marry their cousins, or have Boys marrying boys, or run around with their handsout for Govt to bail them out, like the fucking Blue States! Had NO had a Mayor, a Governor, or a US Senator that gave a rats ass and got a lot of those people to safety, the scope of Katrina would have been large but not like it turned out!

New Orleans and Louisiana are areas that should not have been developed. The Natchez Indians even knew that. That man even tried to beat ma nature shows how dumb humans can be. We had a little shake last night here and I really shouldn't talk bad about building where man is not in harmony with nature.

I want to explain something to people who have never suffered from grinding poverty.

It is oppressive in ways that are difficult to understand if you have never experienced it. It causes chronic depression. It consumes your life. The daily struggle to find enough food to keep alive another day is a full time job. The landlord is threatening to evict you. The electric company is going to shut off service on Friday.

Trying to find someone to take care of the kids. Today. Not on a regular basis. Just today. So that you can go to work. Work at the shitty job that pays less than is necessary to survive. Work that is backbreaking. Work that comes with a boss who threatens that if you don't like the job, there are hundreds out there who will do it. And you know he is right. You don't get overtime pay, because he forces you to clock out and then stay and do clean up. Complain to anyone, and you don't have a job.

Your kids are whiney, because they aren't quite warm. And they are not ever really full. You've borrowed so much money from your family to get by that they will not give you more. Waiting in line for hours to apply for foodstamps. Feeling guilty and scummy because you know what people think of you for being on "welfare."

Just a few of the things a lot of mothers in this country face every day. There is no energy left for all those coping skills some people think you should have. Add one more problem and you fall apart. Then some ass is going to ask why you can't cope with losing your home, your job, and everything you possessed, little as it was.
