SAN FRANCISCO -- An 18-year-old San Francisco man was facing attempted murder and arson charges Friday after police say he tried to set a convent on fire.
Mathew Hinz was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly set the front and back doors ablaze of the Good Shepherd Convent in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood at 5 a.m. the morning of October 13th.
"Had these fires continued, they would have fused and eliminated the ability for anyone to escape," Deputy San Francisco Police Chief Morris Tabak told KTVU. "There were six nuns asleep in the structure at the time...They smelled the smoke and were able to exit without injury....This thing could have gone up quickly, and we could have had six dead nuns."
Police obtained a search warrant for an adjacent home and found incriminating evidence and took Hinz into custody without incident.
"He made some incriminating statements," Tabak said. "We don't think this is the first time he's done this…The investigation is continuing to see if he has set other fires."
Hinz has been booked on suspicion of attempted murder, arson of an inhabited dwelling, arson of a place of worship and possession of flammable materials.
