MALONE, N.Y. - There's a lot of farms and farm land in Malone, New York.

Some of them are quite beautiful.

But the farm on the seven signs greeting you as you enter the town of Malone is not in Malone, or the village, or Franklin County or even in New York State.

Five years ago the city held a contest asking people to choose the town's new logo.

A local woman won using a picture of an old red barn in a field.

Turns out the barn is actually quite famous in its own right.

In fact, it's one of the most photographed barns in all of New England and it's in Woodstock, Vermont.

Malone's town supervisor Howard Maneely said, "I'm embarrassed. I probably should've done more research."

Maneely says if people put up a fuss they'll get new signs

Malone Town Council member Paul Walbridge agrees, "If the residents of Malone are embarrassed or want our own signage I certainly would support moving the signs and re-doing them."

Meantime though, the little town's become the talk of several other towns.

The supervisor says the story of this sign snafu was written in newspapers as far as way as Florida

"It's good PR for Malone. So more people will come to Malone? Yeah to visit, see the sign of Vermont.

So both the town supervisor and councilor say they are really just waiting to see how the public feels about this whole thing before they act.

Incidentally the signs cost the town about $5,000.
