Thanksgiving is still a month away, but WorldNetDaily is already selling “Christmas-defense kits,” with tools to help you “fight back” against the “the American Civil Liberties Union grinches.” Included in these kits are magnets, “Operation: Just Say ‘Merry Christmas’” bracelets, and various bumper stickers. One example: the example didn't come through. A bumper sticker saying, this is America and I'm going to say it. Merry Christmas.
As Andrew Sullivan notes, “The culture-war season starts earlier every year.” 5:28 pm thinkprogress.org 10/18/07
Let the games begin. Everyone, get your arguments in order. There isn't much time until the battle for the hearts and minds of the insatiably greedy. Merry something.:mw

And Happy Hanukkah. I wasn't drunk when I posted. Just watching tv. When I looked down nothing was there, so I posted again. And again. It was intense.
Happy Holidays
Seeing as cince (to me) Christmas is a Holy Day that is appropriate and that was wahat thw word holiday meant.
The word holiday has related but different meanings in English-speaking countries. A contraction of holy and day, holidays originally represented special religious days.

We're Catholic. All of our greeting cards say "happy holidays' you name it, I got a friend of that religion or not. :lmao Yep, a couple of agnostics and atheists on the list, but they still get a happy holiday card. :kiss

Well, if the biggest emphasis for these types of people is what to call the day, then they've pretty much missed the point of the season, wouldn't you say?
Up in PA I play it safe (read: trying to be gracious) and say, "Happy Holidays." Down in the Bible Belt I'm gonna say, with GREAT gusto, "Merry Christmas."
What can I say? I'm flexible ... :D

I say whatever the holiday is--Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, Happy Chaunnukkah, Eid Mubarak, etc. I see no need to censor my holiday well-wishes. :shrug

I say Merry Christmas. I figure if me saying something so inocuous can send someone into hysterics they have bigger issue. I love Christmas time. Sure it is a huge Christian holiday for me but that is not why I say it. Most Christmas celebrations have very little to do with Christ.

I don't think it bothers any non-Christian to hear Merry Christmas..the meaning of the day is no longer holy....just buy and get presents.
It's the religious right who are starting this up....they are the ones who want to make sure everyone says merry Christmas...as usual, they are intolerant of others...

There are elite individuals in each group who want to have total dominance this is not held as a special thing for Christians.

I don't think it bothers any non-Christian to hear Merry Christmas..the meaning of the day is no longer holy......I have never been offended by by the use of the greeting-Merry Christmas and not because of the commercization of the season. My mother and siblings as well as my many many aunts, uncles and cousins are christian and we have visited my mother every year on christmas eve or go to a relatives for a big family christmas party and then would spend time with my inlaws on christmas day. My FIL is actually an ordained baptist minister (he does not preach and has been active in politics until he retired this year) and we have put a christmas tree at our house for them a couple years so that they could have christmas with ther grandchildren.
My middle child was in her high school choir and the choir director would always do elaborate christian music productions that we all enjoyed for the sake of the music (but not his complete lack of sense as to what was appropriate Jewish music that he occassionaly added to his programs).
As far as I am concerned the war on Chirstmas is silly. None of the Jews who I know care if you say Merry Christmas or Happy Holiday.

I was surprised when about 10 years ago my gyn shared, while he was doing the DEED, that his family, who were Jewish, always puts up a "Christmas" tree.

One of my partner's wife (they are Jewish) would not allow a tree at their house and so his daughter got to decorate the christmas tree at the firm.

I wish someone would start a movement, boycott, whatever it takes to prohibit any mention of Christmas until after Thanksgiving. It lasts long enough. I get so sick of it I want to scream.
LOL... as a liturgical Christian (one who observes the Church year) I wish all mention of Christmas would be held off until Christmas Eve - the season before Christmas is a beautiful, spiritual, reflective 4-week season called Advent, which keeps the watch the entire year, and remembers the darkness in which we all live, while still bearing witness to the light ... but I think I might be whistling in the wind on that one!!! :)

I'm Jewish. Dh is Catholic. I seriously hate the diluting of all the traditions and religions by fear of offending. It's back-assward to me. Not calling a Christmas tree a CHRISTMAS tree (when that's what it is) or mandating "Happy Holiday" greetings instead of Merry Christmas isn't embracing diversity and encouraging pride in each heritage...it dilutes them ALL to the point that none have any significance.
And it seriously pisses me off too. :bitch
I have often sent out mixed blessing holiday cards that have an assortment of greetings on them. check them out at http://mixedblessing.com/index_store.php?cPath=21 They don't diminish or dilute each tradition....they embrace them and emphasize that we can all celebrate meaningfully with each other. To do otherwise is offensive to me.

Ancient Celebrations:
Trees have played an important role from ancient times in pagan religions, and were even worshipped. In pagan mythology, the evergreen tree was a symbol of the essence of life.
Norsemen (ancient Scandinavians), Celts (early people of British Isles) and Saxons used trees to ward off witches, evil spirits, and ghosts. Yggdrasil was the Great Tree of Life in the Norse mythology. In the North European countries, many would lose family members in the severe and harsh winters. All trees would die except the fir tree. It therefore represented life. As a result many people placed the fir tree in their homes as a symbol of life, with the hope that having it inside their homes would bring their families life, health and wealth.
In Northern Europe, the winter festivities were considered to be a Feast of the Dead, focusing on the Norse god, Odin, and his night riders, with ceremonies full of spirits and devils. One particular solstice festival was "Jol" (Yule), celebrated throughout Northern Europe in honor of Jolnir, another name for Odin. Since Odin was the god of intoxicating drink and ecstasy, as well as the god of death, Yule customs varied greatly from region to region.

So, what are all of you doing for Halloween? What are you dressing up as? I'd really like to know. I think it is great that grownup get to dress up.
Did you know that Jack O' the Lantern was an Irish drunk who choked to death on a bite of his turnip? They use turnips in Ireland, which grow bigger than ours. St. Peter filled the hole in his turnip with lamp oil and he wanders in the darkness forever. Because neither god nor the devil wanted him.
