San Francisco’s Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have made new waves-by taking communion from the Archbishop of San Francisco at a Sunday celebration of the Catholic service.
Archbishop George Niederauer was caught on videotape giving the Eucharist to two people dressed in costume (one of whom wore an outfit similar to a nun’s habit) at a recent mass at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, according to CBS5.com, a San Francisco news outlet.
The church is located in San Francisco’s Castro district. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are know to dress as nuns and appear in public, often on roller skates, as a form of protest against the Catholic Church’s antigay policies.
The video clip of the Archbishop giving communion to the Sisters has been posted at YouTube, and appeared on Fox News, where host Bill O’Reilly made it the centerpiece of a report, calling the incident an "unbelievable outrage."
The video’s publicity has generated hundreds of email messages written by angry Catholics.
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have drawn criticism in the past for supposedly mocking the sacrament of communion. The group drew fire to the Folsom Street leather fair earlier this month when their hiring by fair organizers to provide entertainment caught the attention of The Catholic League, which was also offended by the fair’s pormotional poster, which depcited revelers in poses copied from Da Vinci’s painting of The Last Supper.
The YouTube video appears to show the costumed individuals simply receiving communion and then going on their way.
Even so, the Archbishop issued an apology for allowing them to receive the sacrament, saying that although he did not realize who they were at the time, "After the event, I realized that they were members of this particular organization and that giving them Holy Communion had been a mistake."
Niederauer, who a spokesman for the archdiocese said had not encoutnered the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence before since his relocation to San Francisco a year and a half ago, went on to say that the Sisters were "deeply offensive" in their conduct.

Funny no outrage at this from the civil right activist, the ACLU or other people that condemmed Coulter.

Exactly whose civil rights were violated here Reverend?
I was just saying that it is funny how you can insult and attack Christianity and it is found to be humorous and ok but you attack another religion and you are attacked and condemned.
You also knew good and well what I meant.

No it wasn't funny and to purposely enter a service and disrupt it is disgusting and wrong. No one forced them to go, they went of their own free will and willfully ATTACKED peoples beliefs. It would have been one thing if they had been forced to go but they weren't.
If a Christian or someone had done this in a Mosque or a Tabernacle it would have been front page and publicly condemned by everyone.

You can't be serious or maybe you are blind
They dress up to make fun of someone beliefs and mocked a sacred act to the church.

I watched the video. they stood in the line like everyone else, there was no yelling, screaming, running or other craziness going on. Where was the disruption? Where did they attack anyone's beliefs, I didn't hear any one of them say anything.

Oh, Reverend, I see. You don't approve of the way they look. Do you know where this particular Church is? It's in the Castro district of San Francisco. Now I lived in SF for a while. I can assure you that their appearance is not that unusual. More importantly, the good Bishop didn't seem to object and really isn't he the authority figure here. Do you want to apply for the job?
They mocked a sacred act.

Dressing up like a nun and you find nothing wrong with that.
How about I put a clown face and a Kippah and Tallit and attend a Jewish ceremony, would that be OK? Or would it be found offensive?
These people routinely make fun of Catholitism.

Nothing against Catholics, most of my family is Catholic (and they are pissed about this) but NONE of the name links on that page claim to be Catholic.
Just writing a letter and saying someone is something doesn't make it so.
As for their charitable work, good that still doesn't give them the right to do this.

I have no problem with their charity, my whole point from the getgo was how hypocritical people are when it comes to a Christian religion compared to others.
I am tired of being attacked (not here) for my beliefs and I am tired of people getting in an uproar when other religions are attacked and doing nothing when Christianity is. I am tired of hypocrits and people with agendas.
You know what I am done here (this thread) apparently it is ok to make fun of Christians religions and I am just going to have to live with that bias.

The problem being the "disgraceful" and un-repented fashion and purpose in which they have partaken of the "Lords Supper".....it is a political slap in the face to the members of this church, if indeed they were accustomed with church protocol and Catholic themselves, as suggested by some. They very well knew that their actions were disgraceful and disrespectful.
The memorial in celebration of Jesus which constitutes the hub of public worship on the Lords day(Sunday) is designated by such terms as "communion," "Lords supper," "breaking of bread," "Lords table," or "eucharist".
Jesus Himself instituted this memorial on his last passover, the day of his betrayal. Jesus used the elements of the passover, unleavened bread, and the fruit of the vine, but gave them new meaning. The unleavened bread became emblematic of Jesus' body and the fruit of the vine of representative of Jesus' blood.
When Christians partake of the Lord's supper they proclaim Jesus....He lived...vicariously died, and He is coming again. The breaking of the bread is also a proclamation of the establishment of the kingdom and of the New Testament.
The Lord's supper is to be partaken of in the kingdom/church by born again people on the first day of the week. As stated the communion is a remembrance of Jesus. Christians are to examine themselves to determine if they are partaking in the right way. There is an element of anticipation in partaking; "For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord;s death till He come" 1Cor11:26
There have been numerous memorials instituted by God. There was the rainbow, the Jewish passover, and the manna from heaven. All of these "had" special importance. However, the Lord's supper surpasses all memorials in it's significance and implications.......any act to disrupt such a service indeed should be the "personification" of defining a "hate" crime...if there is indeed such a concept...as espoused by some. But the very reactions on this thread of posts alone....indeed shows how someones intent of "thought" can not be actionable in relation to crime...as it is both pragmatic and "interpretive".....Same old same old.....can anyone spell "hypocrisy". BD

I think that the Bishop that served communion made a good point here
"I apologize to the Catholics of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and to Catholics at large for doing so," Archbishop Niederauer writes.
"Someone who dresses in a mock religious habit to attend Mass does so to make a point. If people dress in a manner clearly intended to mock what we hold sacred, they place themselves in an objective situation in which it is not appropriate for them to receive Holy Communion, much less for a minister of the Church to give the Sacrament to them."
"Therefore I conclude that the presence of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at the Mass on October 7th was intended as a provocative gesture. In that moment I failed to recognize it as such, and for that, as I have said, I must apologize," the Archbishop conclude
