TUCSON, Ariz. -- A 6-year-old girl sleeping on her living room couch was struck and killed by a bullet that was fired through the front door of her home, sheriff's deputies said.

Analissa Monarea-Leon died shortly after being taken to a Tucson hospital, Pima County sheriff's Sgt. James Ogden said.

She was in the home with her mother, her boyfriend and two siblings when the shot slammed through the door at about 5 a.m. Tuesday, Odgen said.

"The person who did this must turn himself in," Ogden said outside the Southwest Tucson home.

A Tucson Unified School District official said Analissa was a student at nearby White Elementary School and crises teams were on the scene by 9:30 a.m.

"No one is ready to comment," TUSD spokeswoman Karen Bynum said of the school's students or faculty. "The emotions are too raw. They would just break down.

Analissa's mother was sleeping in another room, Ogden said. She and her boyfriend had heard gunfire and got up to investigate, only to find the child mortally wounded.

Two other children in the house were unharmed, Ogden said.

Authorities said the mother's boyfriend was arrested at the hospital on a felony warrant for a probation violation involving weapons misconduct.

Department of Corrections records indicate Johnathan Rodriguez was released from prison in October 2006 after serving two years for aggravated assault, according to the Tucson Citizen.

Deputies said they are investigating an earlier incident between two vehicles that erupted into gunfire.

One was a newer model Chevrolet Tahoe and the other was an Oldsmobile sedan, according to the newspaper.

Ogden said he was unsure if the earlier incident was connected to the shooting that killed the girl, but investigators are looking for both vehicles.

People with information about the fatal shooting or the two vehicles should call law enforcement authorities at 88-CRIME.

It was on our local news last night, quite sad, her best friend wrote a letter to her. The mother asked for no retailiation, just to find the killer.

Actually, I did mean to say "wrong place, wrong time". A 6 year old belongs in her own bed at 5am, not sleeping on the family sofa.

Its the couch's fault. Damn illegal furniture.

Funny, when my kids are sick, they sleep on the couch, the floor. When they have sleepovers, they sleep in the basement. My youngest son used to sleep in the closet.

Ohhhhh, so only people in bad neighborhoods should be forced to sleep in their beds for fear of stray bullets ;)

2 shootings in one night=unsafe neighborhood.

"Aside from Tuesday’s Pima County Sheriff’s large Command Center vehicle, neighbors said the block is usually quiet in the morning, but can get rough at night. Ogden said an even earlier Tuesday morning incident involved shots fired at 1:30 a.m. He said the incident involved two vehicles that were seen on the corner of San Joaquin and Dakota"

"The Dakota Street block, which backs up to a view of Tucson Mountains, has improved within the past few months, he said, but loud parties and drug dealing are not unheard of. Ogden is urging anyone with information about the fatal shooting or the two vehicles reported Tuesday morning to call 911 or 88-CRIME"

Yep...it is...with tougher laws on criminals, including ALL the illegal aliens, maybe we can clean up this country! The Death Penalty is well deserved, it stops recidivism!

Ohhhhh, so only people in bad neighborhoods should be forced to sleep in their beds for fear of stray bullets ;)

Funny thing, I never slept anywhere besides my bed, the whole time I was growing up.....my parents must have been weirdos huh?

I don't think they are safe anywhere

You are correct!!! NO place is totally safe...I keep stressing that in my classes over and over...It's the first words that I speak in my lecture...

Depends. But, I have seen the news footage on this case. It actually shows the distance between the door and the road.

What if she wan't feeling well and she shared a room or visa versa, what if the air in her room was out. To blame this on the parents is stupid, at 5am both of my children are up and getting ready, what then?

The temperatures drop 30 degrees at night in AZ, no need for air at night or early am. As a child, my butt was in my bed sleeping. My kids have fallen asleep in the car and on th couch and we always carrry them into their bedrooms. I guarantee you more will come out of this story due to lack of parenting.

Not to mention that when one of us were sick (we shared bedrooms) the not sick one slept on the couch to avoid getting sick.

AGAIN blaming parents in this case is stupid.

Well, if Al Gore can win the Nobel peace prize, I guess I could humbily accept that award.

In all seriousness, I believe there's more to the story than we know about. In a TV interview the mother asked for "no retaliation" for her daughter's death.

"Authorities said the mother's boyfriend was arrested at the hospital on a felony warrant for a probation violation involving weapons misconduct. Department of Corrections records indicate Johnathan Rodriguez was released from prison in October 2006 after serving two years for aggravated assault, according to the Tucson Citizen"
