Similar thought, from Army Basic Training at Fort Ord, CA (A few miles from Monterey, Pebble Beach, or Carmel).

Doing Land Navigation exercises over the most beautiful rolling hills I have ever seen, my team stopped on the top of a hill and took a break under a huge tree.

The grass was dead, but soft and yellow-white. We laid down and just looked out over the ocean on a beautiful June day with a cool ocean breeze.

Heaven could not be better.

I think the Fort land was given back to California. The only military reminate showing on the map below is the "Bayonet Black Horse Golf Course".

I forget what AITs were there.

I don't play Golf. The golf course I mentioned appears to be where the Rifle Ranges were on the beach. The Rifle Ranges had 5 miles of beach front property, explaining why Califorina and Realtors wanted it back from the Feds.

It was about two miles to the barracks and you would start at the closest ranges. At the end of Basic, you were jogging 7 miles each way to and from the most distant range.

As for the land navigation break, I could find no image on-line that would do justice to my memory, but this gives the general idea.

Oh, there were no insects there. I never saw even a fly during the 9 weeks.

I told myself I was in great shape back then, drinkin' coffee 'n
