In the next 10 years, an estimated 100 million girls will be married before they turn 18. On Friday, October 12, in an hour-long special broadcast, NOW takes an unprecedented inside look at a global custom that devastates girls' lives and holds back communities.

Married at seven and sent to her husband at puberty. :eek
I believe that we had a thread on here before about the young age of mothers and fistulas. :cry
I'm going to watch this. Thanks Kurtz.

One question I would have for you is are you passing this off as something "new"? I believe this goes back Centuries, and the Pedophile community actually believes they have a right to these young girls and boys.

Nah, I just posted about this documentary that was on PBS, that's all.
Just coz somethin' has been around for centuries
doesn't mean it should go on for even more centuries.
Ringo is our resident expert on pedophilia info, some of it is actually correct. My position is I don't approve of abuse of power whether it be by men of faith or not especially when they exercise it over children in a dehumanizin' manner. Oh yeah, I don't like women who abuse power either, but I do like Hillary. :lol Didn't like that Kathy Lee Gifford situation tho. :mad
btw, love the song, especially the Bobby Darin version. :love

Actually in some cultures it's quite acceptable to have an arranged marriage from birth.
And back in the day, down on the farm it wasn't unusual for girls to marry at 14 or so and start having children to help around the farm.
It's really not that unusual in our culture for girls to marry at a young age.

No, it wasn't unusual for girls to marry young, but they didn't generally marry men old enough to be their grandfathers. That is exploitive.

I don't know about that...I think it was rather common in days of old. Lots of women would die young giving birth back in the day. So I don't think it was that unusual for an older, established man to take on a younger wife to bear him children.
I have a great, great, great Grandfather that was married twice and had nineteen children all told. My family line comes from the second wife, who was considerably younger than him. :shrug

That's pretty much what women were back then. And there are places where that's all they are today. What was Diana when she married Charles? She said it herself. The royal brood mare.

Well...that's true! Women died in childbirth quite a bit back in the day. The babies were usually delivered at home by whoever was available to help.

sparks has a good point.
I'd also like to add that for centuries, having children was a woman's NUMBER ONE PURPOSE. As soon as a woman hit puberty, she was considered able to have children, and was married off.
I mean, look at Juliet (of Romeo and Juliet). They were kids, man. And that story took place in high society in an age of "enlightenment".
Not only that, but marriage has evolved in to a much different relationship. For centuries polygamy was necessary and logical since women and children didn't work and had to rely entirely on a patriarchal figure for their survival. It isn't like there were food stamps back then.
Of course, now life expectancies are higher; birth rates are higher due to better medical care; and overall society has grown and changed to value the individual--not just the 'tribe'.
In parts of the world where progress has been slow, these are still acceptable practices--but calling it pedophilia is ludicrous. This is just the way it is there. Pedophilia is a covert, perverse behavior that is sexual in nature and based on controlling a person; what has happened in centuries gone by is an open alliance and a relationship based more on wealth and politics than on sex.

The guy that ran the internal "surplus" store at a Fortune 100 company where I worked, bragged to customers that he "regularly" went to Mexico and married a 15 year old girl and would bring her to the USA.
He said, she would stay with him as long as she could stand it, then run-away. He was proud that the girls found him intolarable.
He would then return to Mexico and marry another.
Oh, apparently the marriage certificate was enough to get the girl into the USA, but was not a recognized marriage in the USA.

I watched part of the video and read about the foreign child marriages. Although, I don't agree with it, it seems we are pushing our Western philosphies on other countries again.
As far as stateside marriages, I know that Catholics and farming communities had 8+ children to help with the farming, back in "the day".
Have we all forgotten about Anna Nicole Smith, who was exploiting who in that relationship? YUCK.

Creepy? You're kidding right? First off, it is the desire of most males from about puberty to many years hence! Of late, it is a desire shared by many "progressively minded" girls and young women as well.....
Then, there is the well written prose.......:D
