A 4-year-old girl on a vacation trip to the Grand Canyon died Tuesday after slipping off the canyon edge and falling several hundred feet.

The girl fell near Mather Point just before noon and her father immediately scrambled down the cliffs to reach her, National Park Service spokeswoman Maureen Oltrogge said.

He started CPR, and a Park Service ranger who rappelled down into the canyon also began trying to resuscitate the little girl. A second ranger was lowered to the site by helicopter and determined the child was dead, Oltrogge said.

The father suffered an ankle injury while trying to reach his daughter, officials said. He was taken out by forest officials.

The child's body was recovered from a spot about 400 to 500 feet below the rim, Oltrogge said. The area where she fell is a combination of sheer drops of 30 to 50 feet, then slopes leading to more dropoffs.

Oltrogge said the child's death is a reminder to everyone that extreme care needs to be taken at the canyon rim, especially with children.

"It's a tragic reminder of how a family vacation can turn tragic in an instant," Oltrogge said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family."

The girl is from Arizona, but her name and hometown won't be released until Wednesday, Oltrogge said.

I am shaking from just reading this. :(

That is sad for the family. We went to the Grand Cayon in May '07,our kids were 9 and 11 years old. I didn't let them out of my site, there's a rail, but it just one wrong move and it's over. :sad

That has been a huge fear of mine since I was little. I went to the Grand Cayon when I was 9 and also to Coal Canyon... it scared the crap out of me & I'd be so nervous taking my kids there.

I have not taken my children to see it and I doubt I will until they are old enough to understand the serious danger.

I've been there 4 times.....and you are correct!

Mine too, I took a 7 year old with me on one of the visits...he started clowing around and it scared me as well!

I have not taken my children to see it and I doubt I will until they are old enough to understand the serious danger.

Good idea...most don't appreciate it when they are young anyway.

I guess this is a case of where I speak as a non-biological textbook mother.
WTH were the parents doin' that they would let their kid get that close to the edge?!! :mad

I'd have had my kid on a leash!
And be constantly snappin' my fingers for their compliance.
And they would get the evil eye if they didn't mind. :seeyou

Alas, you are right. :sad I'm sure more will come out of the story.

I hate to sound unsympathetic to the horrified parents, I know kids are hard to handle, well, not my kid, but other kids are. A four year old should be held at least by the hand when in a dangerous location. Shame on the parents.

Nature is a wild beast and many lack respect for it. I thought this was interesting. Fifty-three people accidentally fell to their deaths from the canyon rims between 1925 and 2005, according to Michael Ghiglieri and Thomas Myers, authors of Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon. Obviously most people are safe. I know I was when I have visited.

I watched a guy grab his toodler after the kid was under the lower bar of the fence.

The kid was on his way over, leaning on about a 45 degree angle when the guy grabed the kid's t-shirt and pull him back over the top.
