PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The leader of an artists' cooperative has been sentenced to probation for setting up a secret apartment inside a shopping mall's parking garage as part of a project on mall life.

Michael Townsend, 36, said he and seven other artists built the 750-square-foot apartment beginning in 2003 and lived there for up to three weeks at a time.

The artists built a cinderblock wall and nondescript utility door to keep the loft hidden from the outside world.

But inside, the apartment was fully furnished, down to a hutch filled with china and a Sony Playstation 2 — although a burglar broke in and stole the Playstation last spring, Townsend said.

There was no running water — instead they used the mall bathrooms.

On his Web site, Townsend said he was inspired by a Christmastime ad for the mall that featured a "an enthusiastic female voice talking about how great it would be if you (we) could live at the mall."

He built the dwelling "out of a compassion to understand the mall more and life as a shopper."

Townsend said plans to make the apartment "super-sweet" with laminated wood flooring and other perks fell apart last week after he and a visiting artist from Hong Kong walked into the room and were greeted by three security guards. He pleaded no contest to a trespassing charge.

Providence Place Mall spokesman Dante Bellini Jr. described the living space as little more than "an area with stuff in it."

But Providence Police Maj. Stephen Campbell said he and other detectives were so intrigued they visited the apartment to see for themselves.

"I was surprised at what he was able to accomplish," Campbell said. "But what he did was clearly criminal. The mall is private property."

Actually some condo's above a mall would be an excellent idea. Especially if the stores in the mall offered free delivery service to those folks living in the condo's.

Now...let me really freak you all out. I've had several dreams to this effect...that I was living in a condo above a mall. It was actually quite beautiful and highly functional with keyed elevator service for the tenants. There was public transportation for the tenants and it was all very upscale with beautiful landscaping, walkways and courtyards. As a matter of fact in one of my dreams there was an amphitheater for shows and entertainment and so forth. I really think it's a great idea. Highly functional for the elderly too. :)

It's weird cause I've had this dream several times! Strange I know, but it sure worked out well in my dreams, and I woke up thinking what a good idea that would be for a developer to run with. :lmao

LOL well I just don't know who would live there. I certainly hope you would offer bathrooms in the apartments. I do not use public restrooms and cannot believe that people do for weeks on end! :puke

Please tell me that they have working bathrooms in each unit.

Also, without the package delivery what would be the purpose?

Yes, they all have their own bathrooms, some even have two. :lol
The reason they do it is housing shortage, folks like to live in Dallas. :D

There are rather fancy condos above the new Trader Joe's on Monroe Street in Madison, WI. I'd live in 'em if I had the chance. Imagine underground parking so your car never gets covered with snow (in Wisconsin!) with Trader Joe's downstairs for food and wine. Not sure about the whole mall thing as I'm pretty much anti-mall in general but I can see the bennies.

I had NO idea! :rofl

Cass, in my dreams it was a very, very upscale situation and bathrooms weren't an issue. The bennies were the convenience of the shopping as close as an elevator ride and delivery of meals by any restaurant in the mall. Also the other stores delivered. The older I get the more I'm into convenience! :rofl

Also, with this type of situation you can reap the energy of a crowd when in the mood with nothing more than an elevator ride. It was actually pretty cool in my dreams. Indoor walking in bad weather as well. The public transportation was upscale as well. Not what we think of as public transportation in the city. :rofl
