View Full Version : A matter of ethics...

Ok...so I just got through watching "The Devil Wears Prada" and it brings some ethical questions to the forefront.
How much of yourself are you willing to compromise for a chance to get ahead in the career world?
Would you rather be the fucked or the fucker in a given situation at work?

I will compromise on anything that I don't think is important. That's pretty much my general rubric.
I try to not be in situations where I'm the fucked or the fucker. My preference is for what the business world calls win-wins. :-)

I like win / win too Bill as I think most people do as well. However, it's not always practical is it?
So...given the situation that you're either the fucked or the fucker, which would you choose?

If I had to pick, I'd rather be the fucked. I think it's important not to screw over my fellow man, so I'd rather do no harm as they say.

I have to say that I feel more comfortable in the fucked role over being the fucker. I guess the bottom line is I have to be able to look myself in the mirror and live with myself and if I have a path of destruction in my wake I don't know how I'd be able to do that.
Of course allowing oneself to be the fucked also creates a bit of destruction too...self-destruction on another level. We may be content to live inside our morals and convictions but sometimes it can be a lonely place if we're constantly getting fucked cause of them. Ya know?
It's actually a hard thing to admit either way, isn't it?

I couldn't have stated it any better sparks. :clap

:paclap, Agreed. If more people felt this way the world would be a better place...of course there would be no managers if this were the case :)

But one must hope that you have enough character to keep walking the good path. Isn't that how bad things start? You start comprimising your morals and beliefs to "fit in"?

Not for me. Being the fucker means that you're willing to hurt someone.
Being the fucked means you're willing to "take it" so the only person hurt is you.
Being noble is a good thing. :thumbsup

Fucked - fucker - fuck it! That's why I've had so many different career paths! I won't stand still for either, once I am aware of the fucking taking place. So I say - fuck it! I'm outta here. Not a problem. To thine own self be true.

For many...for most, that is not an option, Z. I wish it was, but, damn it, those kids want to eat and need health care insurance. :shrug
So I "lube-up" everyday, head in and take it...but I am getting that degree soon so I too can move on and say fuck it! :whew

I understand - now where are those rose-colored glasses of mine?
Perhaps I watched too many John Wayne movies as a kid. (Love the westerns) Pilgrim. :lol

Great John Wayne quote "I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I expect the same from them. The Shootist (1976) "

I would most likely fall into this category. I personally cannot be the one thwarting others.

Who ever really thinks they'd be the fucker? And isn't it all a matter of perspective anyway? Maybe the person who's the fucker is actually a really great person who was just caught in a set of circumstances that required them to make the best choice possible for themselves?

Exactly, Dee! Most fuckers are bending over and taking it from the fucker who is up higher than them - it's kill or be killed! :lol

I tend to agree with this. The only people who really know the truth in many circumstances are those directly involved. Office gossip gets pretty distorted.
Personally I don't fuck with people unless they fuck with me first and it usually comes with a warning up front not to do so....so if they go ahead with their plan then are they actually being fucked over or just being stupid? :)

But, are they making the best possible choice for themselves in the long-run, or just the short-run? Compromising your morals to get ahead may seem OK and the best choice at the time, but it is a short-run solution. In the long-run, compromising your morals may affect not only your own phyche and mental health, but also what happens to you after this life.

It's one thing to be fucked over by the boss, but entirely different to pass that fucking onto someone else. I say Fuck the Boss! I'm not compromising my morals for him/her by doing their dirty work.

But Dog...shit rolls downhill! :rofl
And I call bullshit on your saying "fuck the boss"...unless your boss is really, really, really attractive! :)
In the movie "The Devil Wears Prada" Ande was told by her boss to let the other assistant know she was no longer going to Paris...that Ande was going in her place. If the other assistant was gonna get fucked one way or another why would it matter if Ande was the one who told her she'd been demoted? What difference would it really make in the end? She's gonna get fucked either way!
If I was the other assistant though and if I got the news from an underling, I'd certainly follow up with the Boss to make sure this news was valid though. :shrug

If you're talking specifically about the movie, I'd have to say that I don't think Ande screwed the other girl over at all. She just happened to be more qualified and so the boss made the best choice for herself and her business :shrug That being said, it was in HORRIBLE form for her to have Ande break the news to the other girl :no That was very unprofessional, IMHO.
